South Limburg, un-Dutch beautiful!

A green, undulating hilly country, many castles and half-timbered farms, blooming orchards, tombs and sunken roads, the rich language, culture and traditions, and delicious regional products: that is South Limburg! These unique properties make this southernmost part of the Netherlands an area with its own identity.

Pearls along the way

They are scattered like white pearls in the undulating green hilly landscape: the characteristic half-timbered houses and half-timbered farms. Until the last century, farmers built and maintained these white houses with wooden frames themselves. The construction, in which the skeleton is made of wood, stones, straw and loam, was the normal way in which houses were built in the Heuvelland until 1850. There are crossroads along roads and paths, against houses or in the middle of the landscape, everywhere in South Limburg. These small monuments are characteristic elements of the Catholic faith and each have their own story.

Standard orchards and the May pine

When the fruit trees are in full bloom in the spring, they adorn this rolling region with their impressive display of colour. The pink cherry blossom is followed by the creamy white pear blossom and the light pink apple blossom. Because of their landscape, cultural-historical and biological value, the standard orchards have been preserved here. Before the beginning of summer, fertility is brought on to the livestock and the fields by planting a maiden pine. This old tradition can be found in villages such as Meerssen, Valkenburg, Noorbeek and Banholt. A tall, bare pine is 'planted' upright in the middle of the village and decorated with the traditional wreath.

From the land to the plate

In South Limburg, everything grows and blooms in the fields, in the extensive fruit orchards, in the hop fields and on the wine estates. The sun-ripened harvest then ends up in the loving hands of all kinds of professionals: syrup distillers, wine growers, bakers and beer brewers. Did you know that the traditional distilling of Limburg syrup has been added to the UNESCO list of intangible heritage? In various places in South Limburg, apples and pears are cooked in a traditional and traditional way without adding colours, aromas or flavorings to produce the most delicious syrups. You will then find these on the cozy farm terraces. Only a traditional ice cream or piece of pie is missing.
