Tip 2 – Bird watching in De Groote Peel National Park

One of the most special nature reserves in the Netherlands is De Groote Peel National Park, the smallest national park in the Netherlands. The area is mainly known for the peat extraction that has left its mark in this raised bog area. Open plains alternate with water, heath, birch forests and sand ridges, making this landscape an El Dorado for the more than ninety bird species that choose this area as a breeding ground. From the little grebe to the water rail and from the bluethroat to the stonechat. The best way to visit De Groote Peel is on foot. Many walking routes have been set out, including over the 'stick bridges' and from the lookout tower you have a beautiful view of the landscape.

The Brouwschuur is the home brewery of the Weerter City Brewery and here you can taste the most special beers: the Doef van d'n Daeke, for example, Weerts dialect for 'Black Crow'. But brewmaster Erwin Strijbosch goes further: he guides other brewers in the brewery, develops recipes for others and you can even have your own beer brewed here, according to your own recipe.

You will ride over the new bicycle bridge (free) straight through the Overloon War Museum. The cycle route has no fixed start or end point. At various stopping points, recognizable by a special bench, you can look at the liberation operations at that location from a different perspective. Here you experience not only what soldiers experienced, but also how civilians emerged from the war. The Maasplassen are the mecca for every water recreationist. You can swim, surf, sail, SUP, dive, row or canoe here, and adventurous thrill seekers can opt for faster water sports such as flyboarding, water skiing or wakeboarding. Tip 9 – Dragon Village Beesel

The village of Beesel is located right on the German border, known for its dragon drawing: an open-air theater spectacle that is performed once every seven years at Nieuwenbroeck Castle - the oldest known mention dates from 1736. After the performances there is a historical parade with a fire-breathing dragon of 14 meters long. The last edition of the Dragon Stitching was in 2016; so you will have to wait until the summer of 2023 for new performances. But even without a dragon sign, Beesel is worth a visit, if only for the car-free border crossing where you can cycle through the green landscape to Germany.
