The beach feeling of the Beachy 360

The beach feeling of the Beachy 360

“A simple caravan that smells like the beach.” With these words, Managing Director Holger Schulz introduces the first Hobby Beachy caravan, Hobby's second brand, designed for the new generation of campers. We looked at the Beachy 360.

Simple, but with a fresh look. This is noticeable when we look at the Beachy 360 from the outside. The caravan has been developed for smaller and electric passenger cars: ready to drive, the smallest model weighs 750 kilos and you can load it up to 900 kilos - that leaves 150 kilos of loading capacity - the rest of the holiday belongings have to go in the car. You can also get the Beachy with a maximum permitted mass of 1200 kilos. If your car is allowed to tow, you can take no less than 450 kilos of holiday luggage with you.

Exterior

The Beachy has smooth plating and fresh, minimalist striping. What is striking is the absence of the drawbar box – which saves kilos. The drawbar box is on the options list, for extra storage space. The caravan has one side window and two doors, both with porthole windows. One on the side and an extra wide door at the rear: useful for sliding in a surfboard, for example.

The rear door opens in two parts: the lower part opens to the side, the upper part opens upwards. The undulating shape of the roof, inspired by the sea, is striking. We see the same 'wave' in the striping of the Beachy, a nod to the beach feeling with which the Beachy came off the drawing board.

Living, eating, sleeping

The Beachy is available in three versions: 360, 420 and 450, referring to the body length. The layout is broadly the same: a kitchen plus wardrobe at the front and a lounge area at the back, where the longitudinal sofas can be converted into a bed of 200 by 180 - so you could even sleep there with three people. The wide rear door is useful for large luggage and also provides an Instagram-worthy view from your bed.

On the 360 we only see cupboards under the kitchen worktop - the Beachy is also equipped with open shelves on the left side wall and above the kitchen, where elastic bands prevent the contents from falling out along the way. Together with the standard wicker baskets, it looks very stylish. The long sofas have comfortable, sand-colored seats and back cushions that are used together to turn the seating area into a bed. There are no sofa cabinets: the open space under the sofas can be used to store a weekend bag with clothes, for example.

There is felt against the walls behind the backrests for extra insulation and ventilation. The shape and color are reminiscent of scaffolding wood. There is no bathroom or toilet, but you can take a porta-potti with you in the wardrobe. This is at the expense of storage space. The kitchen has a stainless steel sink with mixer tap; You cook on a separate stove with a gas cartridge – the Beachy does not have a gas system on board. One of the kitchen drawers contains the Dometic cool box with a 38 liter capacity.

Installations

We can be (very) brief about installations: there are none. No heater, no gas installation, no bathroom. It all fits in with the Beachy's design philosophy: campsites have excellent sanitary facilities and cooking is usually done outside, on the BBQ. And there's nothing wrong with that if you're targeting a younger generation of campers.

Conclusion Beachy 360

The Beachy has a fresh design that, together with the back door, seems inspired by the #vanlife hype. The modest equipment keeps the price down, but couldn't it be a little lower? Take the Adria Aviva: two grand more and you do have a bathroom with toilet, shower and a full-fledged kitchen. But that new target group may not be looking forward to that at all…
