Burglary protection for Ducato & Co.

Burglary protection for Ducato & Co.

Whether at a beach parking lot in Southern Europe or a remote campsite in the Alps, the number of campervan burglaries is steadily increasing. Vehicles based on the Fiat Ducato and its sister models from Citroën, Peugeot, and Opel are particularly frequently targeted.

However, with targeted measures, the risk can be significantly reduced – often without the need for an expensive alarm system.

The “stab attack” – or broken into within seconds.

One of the most popular and unfortunately very effective methods criminals use is piercing the metal under the door handle with a screwdriver to manipulate the central locking system. This so-called "prick attack" opens not only the affected door, but in many cases, all the vehicle's doors.

Provide solutions for burglary protection.

Solution: Stainless steel reinforcement plates ("shielding plates") make this attack point unusable. They are permanently active—even when you're not thinking about it.

The panels cost approximately €15 and can be installed by yourself or by many installation partners in the Netherlands.

Tip:

If your vehicle has already been the victim of a puncture attack, external puncture protection can help in two ways:

  • It hides the existing damage.
  • It permanently protects against further attacks.
  • This option is also an alternative to the internal puncture protection – with better visibility.

Additional door security from the inside

Another burglary method: breaking the window and opening the door from the inside.

Many RVs use simple tie-down straps between the driver and passenger doors – unfortunately, these are often easy to cut.

A better alternative: a mechanical door lock with a solid metal bar and latch securely blocks the door handles – even if the window is broken. Suitable for vehicles with traditional door handles and a door width of 1,50 to 1,84 m (e.g., Fiat Ducato up to model series 7, MB Sprinter, Volkswagen T5/T6, etc.).

The rear doors of vans are also a popular target for attacks. In addition to fenders with anti-piercing devices, a rear door lock is recommended: sturdy bars that prevent the rear door from opening, even if the lock is broken.

Why both systems make sense together: Protective plate: prevents the door panel from being pierced, but does not protect against opening via the inside handle. Door lock: blocks the handle, but only works when it is actively installed.

➡️ The combination offers significantly better protection.

Risk of vandalism: AdBlue tank

The Fiat Ducato's AdBlue tank cap is completely disconnected. This makes the sensitive system vulnerable to vandalism and contamination – which can cause costly consequential damage.

Solution: A suitable metal AdBlue protective bracket, which is locked to the fuel cap, provides effective protection against manipulation.

Mechanical immobilizers

The biggest concern for many campers: vehicle theft. A tried-and-true solution is a mechanical immobilizer, such as a robust pedal lock.

It locks the brakes or clutch, preventing the vehicle from moving—even if the perpetrator gets inside. Suitable models for the Fiat Ducato are available with both manual transmissions (model years 2006-2025) and automatic transmissions (from 2014).

Peace of mind and security

Effective security for your RV doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Even a few mechanical security measures can significantly reduce the risk of burglary or theft. The investment remains manageable, but the gains in safety and peace of mind while traveling are enormous. By taking timely precautions, you protect not only your vehicle and equipment, but more importantly, your own sense of freedom on the road.
