The most beautiful camper routes along the Atlantic coast: from Normandy to the Algarve

Why the Atlantic coast is so popular with campers

The Atlantic coast is a dream destination for many campervan enthusiasts. From the jagged chalk cliffs of Normandy to the golden beaches of the Algarve, you'll enjoy sea views almost everywhere. The route is varied, easily accessible, and offers a wide variety of campervan sites and campsites. Moreover, you can easily tailor the trip to your own pace. Whether you have three weeks or just a long ten-day road trip, you can always choose a beautiful route that suits you.

Another advantage: the climate. In spring and autumn, the Atlantic coast is often milder than inland. You avoid the worst heat and crowds, while still enjoying the sun, sea, and sand. And even in summer, especially in northern France and northern Spain, you can find relatively quiet spots if you venture a bit outside the well-known hotspots.

Stage 1: Normandy and Brittany – cliffs, history and rugged bays

Starting your route in Normandy, you'll pass famous sites like Étretat with its iconic chalk arches and the historic landing beaches. Many villages have campervan sites near the town center or the coast, making it easy to stroll to the promenade in the evening. Brittany is the next logical step: rugged rock formations, picturesque fishing ports, and lighthouses overlooking the ocean.

Tip: Occasionally choose smaller, local campsites instead of the large holiday parks. There you'll truly experience the local atmosphere, with fresh fish, cider, and small markets. For campervan owners, there are also special "aires" and municipal campervan sites, often in unique locations with views.

Stage 2: The French Atlantic coast – surfing beaches and pine forests

As you head further south, the landscape changes. Between La Rochelle and Biarritz, you'll find endless sandy beaches, surf spots, and wide ridges of dunes. Campervans are a common sight here. Many campsites are located directly behind the dunes, some with private paths to the beach. In the pine forests of Les Landes, you can even cycle almost endlessly on flat paths.

Popular areas like Biscarrosse, Mimizan, and Hossegor can be busy in the summer, but outside of that, they're wonderfully peaceful. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, choose simple campervan sites just outside the popular surfing spots. Often, you'll find yourself right in the heart of nature for a modest fee.

Stage 3: Northern Spain – rugged coasts and green mountains

As soon as you cross the border into Spain, you'll immediately notice the landscape becoming greener and more mountainous. The Basque Country, Cantabria, and Asturias are known as "Green Spain" for good reason. Here you'll find dramatic cliffs, small bays, and impressive mountain ranges like the Picos de Europa just a short distance from the coast.

For campervan enthusiasts, there are dozens of official campervan sites in villages and towns along the coast. They're often within walking distance of a beach or historic center. Enjoy pintxos in San Sebastián, stroll along the Santander promenade, or find peace and quiet in a small fishing village where time seems to stand still.

Stage 4: Portugal and the Algarve – sun, surfing and charming villages

If you head further south, Portugal awaits. The west coast around Porto, Nazaré, and Peniche is popular with surfers, but it's also easy for regular campers. You'll find campsites and campervan sites with ocean views, often with a relaxed atmosphere and good amenities.

In the far south, the Algarve beckons with its distinctive rock formations, golden beaches, and charming towns like Lagos and Tavira. In recent years, wild camping regulations in Portugal have become stricter, so it's wise to use official campervan sites and campsites. Fortunately, the selection is wide and varied, from simple nature campsites to luxury resorts with swimming pools.

Practical tips for your Atlantic road trip

Good preparation will make your trip much more relaxing. Plan a general route in advance, but leave enough time for spontaneous stops at places you discover along the way. Check that your campervan or caravan is ready for long distances: tires, brakes, fluids, and gas system. Also, ensure a good mix of campsites and campervan sites, so you can take a long shower, wash your clothes, and fill up with water.

It's also wise to be mindful of toll roads and low-emission zones around major cities. Many navigation apps have special settings for campervans, allowing you to avoid low bridges and narrow roads. With the right preparation, your road trip along the Atlantic coast will be an unforgettable experience.
