Where you experience the ultimate summer: camping in the Heart of Limburg

Where you experience the ultimate summer

The camper is set up. The chair is outside. In Hart van Limburg, the only thing you have to decide is: will you go for the wide waters of the Meuse, or for a quiet stream surrounded by trees? Canals, lakes, streams,  the region has them all. And they are always just around the corner.

Hart van Limburg consists of seven municipalities, Beesel, Leudal, Maasgouw, Nederweert, Roerdalen, Roermond and Weert, and each of them has its own relationship with water. The Meuse flows wide and busy, with barges slowly gliding by. Further on, in the green valleys of Roerdalen or Leudal, the water ripples more quietly, between forest and meadow. For those with a camper or caravan, that means: there is always a place nearby to set up your chair with a view of the water.

That makes this area special for campers and caravanners. You choose what suits you that day. In several places you can rent a sloop, a boating license is not always required. Crossing with a ferry, four minutes of water under your feet, and you get off somewhere different from where you got on. Cycling along banks that never end. Swimming if you feel like it. Nothing you have to do.

Here, the soft fruit season begins. Blueberries, plums, and more. At some campsites, you can pick them yourself, straight from the bush, still warm from the sun. The farmer sometimes sells his harvest from the farm, along the side of the road. You don't just taste the region, you taste the passion of the people who make it.

Do you feel like a bit more life around you? By bike, you're quickly in a village center or in the city. A terrace, a bit of strolling, a market, characteristic streets. Just looking for some coziness. Because that's there too, if you want it. And then back again.

Because the evening is for you. Back by the water, chair outside, nowhere to go. The sun sinks low. The light goes from gold to pink to purple. A boat passes by. Somewhere a church bell rings. It gets quieter. And quieter.

Nobody is in a hurry. Neither are you. Because that's exactly why you're here.

Practical: what can you do?

  • Rent a sloop, possible in several places in the region, often without a boating license
  • Cross with a ferry between historic village centers
  • Cycling and walking along banks and through nature reserves
  • Pick soft fruit yourself at campsites or at farms along the road
  • Visit a village center or city for a terrace or market
