Taking a folding bike with you creates possibilities. A bike rack on the back of the camper is not strictly necessary, and at your destination, you remain mobile without having to break down your pitch for a few croissants. However, longer distances can make you wonder if this is still a holiday. An extra compact size quickly gets in the way of a pleasant cycling experience. The Dutch company Lacros, however, brings a series of electric folding bikes to the market that, despite compact dimensions when folded, still offer the comfort of a regular e-bike with 28” wheels.
Lacros started in 2009 with the goal of developing lightweight and affordable electric folding bikes with full comfort. And they succeeded well. Two years ago, Lacros moved to a new building where an impressive number of bikes are customized or serviced. At the front, the showroom proudly displays all models ready for a test ride.
The design and technical specifications were conceived in the Netherlands. The bikes are largely assembled elsewhere in Europe, after which the final assembly and quality control take place in Schijndel, the Netherlands. Here, the bikes can also be adapted to the customer's wishes. A child seat, dog trailer, or other accessories, a lot of customization is possible. Service and repairs can take place in Schijndel or at home. Lacros has a number of service vans on the road that reach all corners of the Netherlands. In addition, any bicycle mechanic can work on a LaCros bike; only a few parts, such as the display, are brand-specific.
Over the years, cycling comfort has been further refined and the range expanded, resulting in a model series that incorporates the latest state of the art technology. At least, when it actually adds something and is reliable, because solidity and durability are highly valued. Therefore, A-quality components are consistently chosen, such as Shimano gears, Bafang motors, Tektro handbrakes, or Panasonic and Samsung batteries.
The Lacros series consists of 7 different models available in various configurations. For example, you can choose whether or not to have saddle suspension, mag wheels, a heavier battery for a greater range, or a mid-drive motor instead of a rear-wheel drive. Both provide a natural cycling experience, but with a mid-drive motor, a NEXUS hub gear is possible. With a motor in the rear wheel, only a derailleur gear can be used. The electric drive assists you up to a speed of 25KM. Depending on the model, the display on the handlebars provides five or nine support levels and shows information about the distance traveled, speed, and remaining battery capacity.
The bestseller that has been continuously developed over the past years into an ideal travel companion with a contemporary look is the Scamper. Folding this aluminum folding bike takes less than 10 seconds. The pedals fold in, the frame hinges through the middle, and the handlebars fold down. This creates a package of 90x40x72cm with a weight of 22kg. The battery is integrated into the luggage rack, as you often see. Standard with a range of up to approx. 40km, a heavier battery with a range of up to 120km is also possible. You can charge with the battery in or out of the bike. But with 6 gears, you can also cycle well without the support of the electric motor.
In addition to the Scamper, Lacros also offers other models such as the sporty Trotter or the more traditional Canter with a battery integrated into the frame. Secured with a lock, the battery is easy to remove from the frame, and you can also charge it in or out of the folding bike. When folded, these bikes measure 89x40x72cm with a weight of 20kg, excluding the battery.
Easier is also possible. The Lacros Ambling has an extra low step-through, which prevents an accidental stumble. Furthermore, this version has the same pleasant riding characteristics and technical ingenuity as the Scamper.
Completely in line with the latest trend, a fatbike is not missing from the range. The Mustang with 7 gears, 20-inch wheels and disc brakes gives you a carefree ride in style. Like all Lacros bikes, available in different colors.
A folding bike that offers the same comfort as a regular bike requires proof. A short test ride on a Scamper is the moment of truth. And that is that a Lacros indeed rides like a large-sized E Bike. The curved handlebars and a comfortable saddle provide a seating position that leaves nothing to be desired. With a reclined front fork, the bike steers easily without continuous overcorrection. The suspension in the front fork and the somewhat thicker tires effortlessly smooth out the bumpy cobblestone road we are cycling on. And braking or shifting also offer no surprises. Electric cycling is fun on this folding bike. You stay active but without getting tired. And with a generous range, you can get somewhere.
