Dethleffs Aero 510ER: a space miracle packed with extras

Dethleffs Aero 510ER: a space miracle packed with extras

Dethleffs is one of Europe's oldest caravan brands. New for model year 2021 is the Aero, with which Dethleffs celebrates the brand's 90-year history. The Aero series consists of five caravans. We are looking at the Dethleffs Aero 510ER, a caravan with single beds.

Founder Arist Dethleffs toured all over Europe as a traveling salesman. Because he missed his family, he built his first caravan in 1931 so that his family could travel with him. That was an innovation that did not go unnoticed. In 1936, Arist started building his first series of caravans: real family cars with plenty of sleeping places.

The Dethleffs caravan program now includes eight series with a total of almost sixty (!) different caravans. The newest series is the Aero – a caravan that was previously featured in Dethleffs brochures but has been completely redeveloped. Because Dethleffs celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2021, the new Aero immediately receives a party package with many extras upon its introduction.

Exterior of the Dethleffs

From the five available models, we choose the Dethleffs Aero 510ER, a substantial caravan with a body length of over six meters. The caravan is 230 cm wide: an excellent width for comfortably driving to your holiday destination. Thanks to the 'Ninety' anniversary package, the caravan has smooth GFK exterior cladding. The roof, front, and rear are also made of polyester, which offers better protection against hail.

Striking features are the substantial 17-inch alloy wheels which, together with the drawbar cover, the understated decals, and the modern front with wide plastic trim, create a luxurious appearance. The extra-wide (70 cm) entrance door, equipped with a window, is a pleasant feature. The caravan has a luggage hatch on the right side – the awning side. This makes it easy to retrieve camping furniture from the storage space under the bed.

Living, eating, sleeping

Inside, the Dethleffs Aero 510ER features light wood colors combined with cream color panels, such as on the overhead cabinets. The large Heki Midi roof hatch provides extra light. The overhead cabinets are wide at the top and narrow at the bottom – this creates a spacious effect in the interior, while still providing ample storage space.

The spacious round seating area can be converted into a second double bed.

The large cupboard flaps offer easy access to your belongings, and there are also open compartments that make the whole thing a bit more playful. And easily accessible, because open compartments are ideal at the campsite for items you want to have quickly at hand, such as your e-reader or tablet. The upholstery is kept light, with ocher yellow details and a subtle checkered pattern – you can also choose from two more types of upholstery, with gray and green details.

The Dethleffs Aero 510ER has a layout with a comfortable round seating area at the back and two single, 85 cm wide beds that can also be linked together. The beds differ slightly in length (180 versus 190 cm) and those ten centimeters benefit the bathroom with toilet, plenty of storage space and the option (optional) to shower – the waterproof shower floor is already included. The kitchen has an integrated hob with three gas burners plus a sink. The kitchen unit has three full-width drawers: plenty of space for pots, pans and groceries.

The single beds are nice and wide and can be linked together with an intermediate piece.

Installations

The caravan is richly equipped with the standard 'Ninety' anniversary package. This includes an extra wide entrance door with screen door, smooth plating, alloy wheels, boiler, an extra large roof hatch with lighting, a large refrigerator (142 liters) with a 15-liter freezer compartment and a kitchen back wall with acrylic glass. Optionally, you can equip the Dethleffs Aero with a winter comfort package so you can go to the snow without any problems.

Conclusion Dethleffs Aero 510ER

The Dethleffs Aero 510ER has a strikingly modern appearance. The extensive anniversary package results in a customer benefit of over three thousand euros. Due to all the extras, the payload is not excessively large, but if your car allows it, you can upgrade the maximum permissible mass (up to 1,800 kg). There is already a Dethleffs Aero that weighs around a thousand kilos empty, with a maximum load capacity of 1,200 kilos.
