The best travel insurance for you

The best travel insurance for you

It can be tempting not to arrange travel insurance and save on costs. You might not want to spend the money on it or don't have it, or you don't realize the consequences if something unexpected happens during your holiday. Realize that the financial consequences such as loss of luggage, theft, or even medical emergencies can be very high. Good travel insurance not only covers these costs but also offers support and assistance on-site, which can be extremely valuable when you are abroad. To compare travel insurance is wise because it helps you find the best coverage that suits your specific needs and budget. This way, you can enjoy your holiday with more peace of mind, knowing that you are protected against unforeseen circumstances.

Different coverages

The coverage for loss, damage, or theft of luggage varies per travel insurer. Some offer this as standard, while others only have it as additional coverage. It is important to carefully consider what coverage you need. For winter sports, for example, standard travel insurance is usually not sufficient and you need additional insurance, because activities such as skiing and snowboarding require separate coverage. Therefore, compare different insurers to find the best travel insurance for your situation.

Take out the insurance on time

If you do not yet have travel or cancellation insurance, it is important to take it out within seven days of booking your trip. This can be either short-term or continuous insurance. If you do not do this within the stated period, cancellation will not be covered by your continuous travel insurance. If you then have to cancel or cut short your trip, you will not be insured for this. That would be a shame given the cost of the trip.

A short-term or a continuous travel insurance

When do you choose a short-term travel insurance? If you go on holiday for less than about two weeks annually, a short-term travel insurance is ideal. You only pay a premium for the days you are actually traveling, usually between €4 and €18 per week, depending on the insurer and coverage. Although a continuous travel insurance is cheaper per day, you take it out for at least one year. When do you choose a continuous travel insurance? If you travel multiple times a year or are away for longer periods, a continuous travel insurance offers more benefits. It remains valid throughout the year and you pay a fixed monthly amount, regardless of how often you go on holiday. The monthly costs typically range between €1 and €9. Although this amount is not high, you pay it throughout the year. Therefore, think carefully about your travel plans before taking out travel insurance.

Smartly adjust your travel insurance

Do you have continuous travel insurance? Then you can smartly adjust it to your travel needs, so you only pay a higher premium when necessary. Suppose you go on holiday twice a year within Europe and occasionally for a weekend trip. You probably have travel insurance with European coverage. If you then travel outside Europe, for example to Asia, Africa or America, you can temporarily upgrade your coverage to Worldwide coverage. After your trip, you can switch the coverage back to European coverage. This way, you only pay a higher premium during the period you travel outside Europe. This also applies if, for example, you go on a diving holiday without this being insured. You can then temporarily adjust your insurance and switch it back to the original coverage after your return.
