Camping in a sewer pipe: Buytenplaets Suydersee

Sleeping in a vegetable greenhouse, in a tree house, gypsy wagon, under a simple tarpaulin (bush camping) and recently: sewer pipe camping. For this you can go to the Buytenplaets Suydersee city campsite, near Lelystad.

“Something different,” says Piet Roskam, owner of the Buytenplaets Suydersee campsite. Together with his wife Marije, he is constantly looking for special ways to spend the night. Their latest acquisition: two enormous sewer pipes with a diameter of 2 meters, which he has single-handedly transformed into a sleeping place for two adults.

Scaffolding wood

Roskam provided the sewer pipes with an interior made of scaffolding wood: a folding platform that transforms the seating area into a sleeping place. The sewer pipes are supplied with electricity for lighting and heating. There is also a USB charging point available. The ends of the tube are provided with tent cloth, for privacy and to prevent rain.

Barbecuing in style

In the morning you can order breakfast, with a view of the campsite's fruit trees. 'And in the evening you can barbecue in style,' Roskam points to the smaller sewer pipe that has been converted into a grill plate. At Buytenplaets Suydersee you can also find other special types of accommodation, such as tree houses, a vegetable greenhouse and a few original gypsy wagons that Piet Roskam has placed at his campsite.

Short and intensive

'The trend for holidays is short and intensive,' says Piet Roskam. 'That is why we look for special ways to spend the night. Sleeping in a sewer pipe lingers longer than camping in France – we want to create a real experience for our guests. And we also have a nice campsite, in a quiet location near the center of Lelystad. Our next project will be an old camper that we will completely refurbish. But of course you can also come here with your own caravan, tent or trailer tent.'
