Camping in a sewer pipe: Buytenplaets Suydersee

Camping in a sewer pipe: Buytenplaets Suydersee

Sleeping in a greenhouse, in a treehouse, gypsy wagon, under a simple tarp (bush camping) and recently: sewer pipe camping. For this, you can visit city campsite Buytenplaets Suydersee, near Lelystad.

'Something different for a change,' says Piet Roskam, owner of campsite Buytenplaets Suydersee. Together with his wife Marije, he is constantly looking for unique ways to spend the night. Their latest acquisition: two enormous sewer pipes with a diameter of 2 meters, which he has personally transformed into sleeping accommodations for two adults.

Scaffolding wood

Roskam furnished the sewer pipes with an interior made of scaffolding wood: a foldable platform that transforms the seating area into a sleeping place. The sewer pipes are equipped with electricity for lighting and heating. There is also a USB charging point. The ends of the pipe are fitted with tent canvas, for privacy and to prevent rain from entering.

Barbecuing in style

In the morning you can order breakfast, with a view of the campsite's fruit trees. 'And in the evening you can get started with the barbecue in style,' Roskam points to the smaller sewer pipe that has been converted into a grill plate. At Buytenplaets Suydersee you can also find other special types of accommodation, such as tree houses, a greenhouse and a few original gypsy wagons that Piet Roskam has placed on his campsite.

Short and intense

'The trend in holidays is short and intense,' says Piet Roskam. 'That's why we are looking for special ways to spend the night. Sleeping in a sewer pipe stays with you longer than camping in France – we want to create a real experience for our guests. And besides that, we have a nice campsite, in a quiet location near the center of Lelystad. Our next project will be an old camper that we are going to completely renovate. But of course, you can also come here with your own caravan, tent or folding trailer.'
