South Limburg, un-Dutch beautiful!

A green rolling hilly landscape, many castles and half-timbered farms, blooming orchards, terraces and sunken roads, the rich language, culture and traditions, and delicious regional products: that is South Limburg! These unique characteristics make this southernmost part of the Netherlands an area with a completely unique identity.

Pearls along the road

They lie like white pearls scattered in the rolling green hilly landscape: the characteristic half-timbered houses and half-timbered farms. Until the last century, farmers built and maintained these white houses with wooden frames themselves. The construction, in which the skeleton is made of wood, stones, straw and loam, was the normal way of building houses in the Heuvelland until 1850. Along roads and paths, against houses or in the middle of the landscape, roadside crosses can be found everywhere in South Limburg. These small monuments are characteristic elements of the Catholic faith and all have their own story.

Standard orchards and the May tree

When the fruit trees are in full bloom in spring, they adorn this rolling region with their impressive display of colors. The rosy cherry blossom is followed by the cream-white pear blossom and the light pink apple blossom. Due to their landscape, cultural-historical and biological value, the standard orchards have been preserved here. Before the beginning of summer, fertility is invoked over the cattle and fields by planting a May tree. This old tradition can be found in villages such as Meerssen, Valkenburg, Noorbeek and Banholt. In the middle of the village, a tall, bare pine tree is 'planted' upright and decorated with the traditional wreath.

From the land to the plate

In South Limburg, everything grows and thrives in the fields, in the extensive fruit orchards, in the hop fields and on the wine estates. The sun-ripened harvest then comes into the loving hands of all kinds of professionals: syrup makers, winegrowers, bakers and beer brewers. Did you know that the artisanal production of Limburg syrup has been added to the UNESCO list of intangible heritage? In an artisanal and traditional way, apples and pears are cooked in various places in South Limburg without the addition of color, fragrance and flavorings to make the most delicious syrups. These can then be found on the cozy farm terraces. Only an artisanal ice cream or a piece of flan is then missing.

At the campsite

No other region in the Netherlands is as suitable for a trip with a camper or caravan. Rolling green hills, extensive plateaus are interspersed with characteristic villages and the most beautiful views. In addition, South Limburg has various tourist attractions and events, which people like to visit in combination with a walk or bike ride.
