Holiday in the Czech Republic: Prague and surroundings
The best way to explore a city? By bike. And preferably with an organized bike tour. In the Czech capital, you can even do this with a Dutch guide. But Prague has much more to offer.
The Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, the square with the astronomical clock: everyone knows the main highlights of the Czech capital. But the unknown Prague is presented on a silver platter during a bike tour – with a Dutch guide. Like the Tom Cruise square, for example, where the most famous scene from the film Mission Impossible was filmed. Or the John Lennon wall: a protest against communism, with drawings, portraits and sayings of the famous Beatles singer.
Stopovers
Other stops include the ugly concrete bridge built by the Russians after the Prague Spring and the Holy Methodius Church where two war heroes committed suicide before they could be captured by the Nazis. Our guide tells you all about it and you are naturally deeply impressed by what happened here.
Another recommendation near Prague is Karlštejn Castle, built by King Charles IV, who had to marry no less than four times before he had an heir to the throne. He mainly used the castle as a repository for the crown jewels, including an almost four-kilogram golden crown, set with precious stones and a thousand pearls.
Kutná Hora
Completely on the other side of Prague lies Kutná Hora, the silver city of the Czech Republic. In this beautiful town, dotted with cobblestone streets, you can take guided tours of the silver mines. Also very special are the three cathedrals, including St. Barbara's Cathedral with a special roof construction and the Church of Our Lady with a statue of a miner from the silver mines.
Also famous is the Sedlec Ossuary, a 'charnel house' on the outskirts of the city, which is actually an above-ground cemetery for 40 to 70 thousand deceased. This place became holy ground after – literally – earth from Jerusalem was scattered there, after which the rich of the country wanted to be buried there. The cemetery quickly filled up, after which it was decided to store the skulls above ground. Brrr!
Camping in the city
Recommended for a campsite in the middle of the city: Camping Caravan Prague, on the island of Císařská Louka in the Vltava, with a bicycle ferry to the center nearby. Full? Then drive a few hundred meters further, because at the Yacht Club there is also a campsite, where you have more space (poor sanitary facilities).

Must see
The calling card of Prague is of course the Charles Bridge: 519 meters long, 30 meters high, 16 arches. It tapers towards the castle. That is part of the castle's defense system.

Must do
Creep out in Kutná Hora, at the Sedlec ossuary which is completely packed with skulls – a bizarre place. Too much? Then visit the Alfons Mucha Museum in Prague, with beautiful drawings by the famous advertising artist who broke through with the poster 'Gismonde'.
