Holiday in the Netherlands: a wonderful time

Almost 90 percent of European campers will still go on holiday this year, according to a study by ACSI Camping Guides. Most campers choose a holiday in their own country. We dare to make that prediction for Dutch campers too. And why not? The Netherlands is a beautiful holiday country.

Unknown places, no long travel times and the absence of language barriers make it very easy for children to make friends at the campsite. Just a handful of advantages of a holiday in the Netherlands.

According to Statistics Netherlands, about 3.6 million people visit a Dutch campsite every year, and for good reason: there is a lot to experience during a holiday in the Netherlands. From beautiful North Sea beaches to the sand drifts on the Veluwe, and from the Wadden Islands to the marl caves in Limburg. And what about the Frisian lakes, where you can enjoy a breath of fresh air in a sloop or with a rented sailboat?

National parks

And then we haven't even talked about the dozens of National Parks in the Netherlands, from the Weerribben to Oosterschelde and from the Biesbosch to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Here you can endlessly spot birds and if you are an early bird, or have a bit of luck at dusk, you can even discover our 'own' Big Five: red deer, roe deer, wild boar, beaver and the seal. Or make it the Big Eight right away, if you expand the set with mouflon, fox and badger!

Walking and cycling paradise

During corona time it will still be a challenge to visit museums or a local market, but for a forest walk you can go to many places in the Netherlands. And besides that, our country is an Eldorado for cyclists. The Gelderland Vechtdal, for example, is known for its beautiful cycling routes through the deciduous and coniferous forests of Ommen. You can also make wonderful trips along the river Vecht and in that area you will find plenty of campsites with luxurious facilities - from July 1st the sanitary buildings will also be open again.

Other highlights in the Netherlands are the Hanseatic cities. And then the lesser-known ones, such as Tiel, Hattem, Kampen and Stavoren. These are the places to experience Dutch history in a special way. Even in these strange corona times, you can still have a top holiday in your own country. And the campsites? They are completely ready for it.

Must do

Visit the port towns on the IJsselmeer! Volendam, Marken, Edam and Monnickendam: these are ancient ports that made our country great with trade and fishing. In some places, the inhabitants still wear traditional costumes.

With the kids

Canoeing in De Biesbosch National Park! You can rent canoes at various locations and paddle silently through narrow ditches and creeks. And you might even spot beavers!

Dutch specialties, who doesn't know them? Zeeuwse Bolus, Friese Dúmkes, Haagse Hopjes, Gouda stroopwafels, Hollandse Nieuwe… And did you know that speculaas originated in the VOC era, with the 'new' spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon? Will the good old 'kapsalon' from the shoarma place ever become as famous?
