Motorhome insurance: is your motorhome well insured?

Motorhome insurance: is your motorhome well insured?

What freedom you have with your own motorhome! You can go wherever you want and you have your own beloved camping gear with you. It is a beloved and valuable possession, which is why it is also very important to think carefully about motorhome insurance.

You experience the most beautiful holidays in your own motorhome. Enjoy a drive, and when you arrive in an area you like, you look for a camping spot. Otherwise, you just keep going. Nice and adventurous! Good motorhome insurance is very desirable. Because even though not everyone likes to think about it, it is certainly important. How do you actually insure a motorhome? What are things you can pay attention to?

Three types of motorhome insurance

Just like with car insurance, there are three options:

Third-party liability (WA)

This only covers damage to others and is legally required.

Third-party liability + limited comprehensive (WA + beperkt casco)

In addition to covering damage to others, this also covers damage to your own motorhome due to fire, theft, storm, and broken windows.

Third-party liability + full comprehensive (all-risk)

This coverage offers everything that limited hull insurance also offers, supplemented with damage to your own camper that you caused yourself.

Comparing insurances

The value of your camper is the most obvious characteristic to base the above choice on. The higher the value, the more logical it is to choose all-risk.

In addition, insurers also have requirements regarding what can and cannot be insured all-risk, and these often differ. Because there are also differences between various all-risk insurances, one is more extensive than the other. And that is not always easy for you as a consumer to compare. Below are four points to help you on your way.

1. Insured value

What exactly is insured in case of total loss? We encounter different values:

  • New value (also called catalog value)
  • New value + indexation (this is adjusting the new value to inflation with the aim that you are able to purchase the same new camper again)
  • Appraisal value
  • Purchase value
  • Current value

Pay attention to how high the insured value is and also the duration for which this value is insured.

2. Deductible

It sounds logical, but if you have a high deductible, the premium is often somewhat lower and vice versa. The deductibles differ per insurer, and sometimes even per type of damage, pay close attention to this.

In addition, it is useful to check whether you have a lower deductible with certain companies, is that with a dealer of the brand of camper you have? That can be very useful, not only for the knowledge and expertise of those companies but also, for example, when replacement parts are needed.

3. Use

The use is important to many insurers; with one, you may use the camper in a way that is not permitted by other insurers. The premium of a normal camper insurance is usually based on your own recreational use. But are you also allowed to lend the camper to family or friends? Or is there a question of rental or business use? Or are you buying a bus camper and do you also want to use it occasionally for errands or family visits? Pay close attention to whether this is allowed, this often differs and you don't want to get into trouble about it afterwards.

4. Replacement camper or replacement transport

This is one of the most important points for campers: if you get stranded abroad and cannot continue, then what? Sometimes you don't want to continue, everyone can imagine that. But not being able to continue because the engine is broken, almost no one is waiting for that. One insurer does nothing, another does its best (but that is often not easy in high season) and yet another guarantees you a replacement Dutch camper. Our advice: prepare, compare and choose consciously. Here too, you don't want to find out when the need is greatest.
