Camper insurance: is your camper properly insured?

Camper insurance: is your camper properly insured?

What freedom you have with your own camper! You can go wherever you want and you have your own beloved camping gear with you. It is a popular and valuable asset, which is why it is very important to think carefully about camper insurance.

You can experience the best holidays in your own camper. Enjoy a nice drive, and when you come to a region you like, look for a camping spot. And otherwise you just keep going. Nice and adventurous! Good camper insurance is very desirable. Because even though not everyone likes to think about it, it is certainly important. How do you actually insure a camper? What are things you can pay attention to?

Three types of camper insurance

Just like with insurance for a passenger car, there are three options:

Legal liability (WA)

This only provides coverage for damage to others and is required by law.

WA + limited airframe

In addition to coverage for damage to others, this also provides coverage for damage to your own camper due to fire, theft, storm and window breakage.

WA + full hull (all risk)

This coverage offers everything that a limited hull also offers, supplemented with damage to your own camper that you have caused yourself.

Compare insurance policies

The value of your camper is the most obvious characteristic on which to make the above choice. The higher the value, the more logical it is to choose all-risk.

Insurers also have requirements regarding what can and cannot be insured on a comprehensive basis, and these sometimes differ from each other. Because there are also differences between different all-risk insurance policies, one is more extensive than the other. And that is not always easy to compare for you as a consumer. Below are four points to help you get started.

1. Insured value

What exactly is insured in the event of a total loss? We come across different values:

  • New value (also called catalog value)
  • New value + indexing (this is adjusting the new value to inflation with the aim of being able to purchase the same new camper again)
  • Appraised value
  • Purchase value
  • Current value

Pay attention to how high the insured value is and also the duration for which this value is insured.

2. Deductible

It sounds logical, but if you have a high deductible, the premium is often lower and vice versa. The deductibles differ per insurer, and sometimes even per type of damage, so pay close attention to this.

In addition, it is useful to see whether you have a lower deductible with certain companies. Is that what you have with a dealer of the camper brand? This can be very useful, not only for the knowledge and expertise of those companies, but also when replacement parts are needed.

3. Use

Use is important with many insurers, some allow you to use the camper in a way that is not permitted with other insurers. The premium for normal camper insurance is usually based on your own recreational use. But can you also lend the camper to family or friends? Or is it rental or business use? Or do you buy a bus camper and do you want to use it occasionally for shopping or visiting family? Make sure this is allowed, it often varies and you don't want to get into trouble afterwards.

4. Replacement camper or replacement transport

This is one of the most important points for campers: if you are stranded abroad and you cannot continue, what then? Sometimes you don't want to continue, everyone can imagine that. But I can't go any further because the engine is broken, hardly anyone wants that. One insurer will not arrange anything, another will do its best (but that is often not easy during the high season) and another will guarantee you a replacement Dutch camper. Our advice: prepare, compare and choose consciously. Here too, you don't want to only find out when the need arises.
