Taking a folding bike creates possibilities. Such a bicycle carrier on the back of the camper is not necessarily necessary and you still remain mobile at your destination without having to leave your pitch for a few croissants. However, longer distances may make you wonder whether this is still a holiday. An extra compact size quickly gets in the way of a pleasant cycling experience. However, the Dutch Lacros is launching a series of electric folding bicycles that, despite compact dimensions when folded, still offer the comfort of a regular e-bike with 28" wheels.
Lacros started in 2009 with the aim of developing both lightweight and affordable electric folding bicycles with full comfort. And that worked out well. Two years ago, Lacros moved to a new building where an impressive number of bicycles are being adjusted or serviced. At the front is the showroom where all models are presented ready to test drive.
The design and technical properties were invented in the Netherlands. The bicycles are largely assembled elsewhere in Europe, after which final assembly and quality control takes place in Schijndel, the Netherlands. Here the bicycles can also be adapted to the customer's wishes. A child seat, dog cart or other accessories, a lot of customization is possible. Service and repairs can take place in Schijndel or at home. Lacros has a number of service vehicles on the road for this purpose, reaching all corners of the Netherlands. In addition, any bicycle mechanic can tinker with a LaCros bicycle, only a few parts, such as the display, are brand specific.
Over the years, cycling comfort has been further refined and the range has been expanded, creating a model series that incorporates the latest technology. At least, if it actually adds something and is reliable, because solid and durable are of paramount importance. A quality parts are therefore consistently chosen, such as Shimano gears, Bafang motors, Tektro handbrakes or Panasonic and Samsung batteries.
The Lacros series consists of 7 different models that are available in different configurations. For example, you can choose whether or not to have saddle suspension, star wheels, a heavier battery for a greater range or a mid-motor instead of a drive in the rear wheel. Both provide a natural cycling experience, but with a mid-motor a NEXUS hub gear is possible. With a motor in the rear wheel, only a gear with a derailleur can be used. The electric drive helps you move forward up to a speed of 25KM. Depending on the model, the display on the handlebar provides five or nine support levels and provides information about the distance traveled, speed and remaining battery capacity.
The bestseller that has been further developed in recent years into an ideal travel companion in a contemporary look is the Scamper. You can fold this aluminum folding bike within 10 seconds. The pedals fold, the frame hinges through the middle and the handlebars down. This creates a package of 90x40x72cm with a weight of 22kg. The battery is integrated into the luggage carrier, as you often see. Standard with a range of up to approximately 40 km, but a heavier battery with a range of up to 120 km is also possible. You can charge with the battery in or out of the bicycle. But with 6 gears you can also cycle well without the support of the electric motor.
In addition to the Scamper, Lacros also offers other models such as the sporty Trotter or the more traditional Canter with a battery integrated into the frame. Secured with a lock, the battery is easy to remove from the frame and you can also charge it in or out of the folding bike. Folded, these bicycles measure 89x40x72cm with a weight of 20kg, excluding the battery.
It can also be easier. The Lacros Ambling has an extra low entry, which prevents an unintentional trip. Furthermore, this version has the same pleasant driving characteristics and technical ingenuity of the Scamper.
Completely in line with the latest trend, a fat bike is not missing from the range. The Mustang with 7 gears, 20 inch wheels and brake discs gives you a carefree ride in style. Like all Lacros bicycles, available in different colors.
A folding bicycle that offers the same comfort as a normal bicycle requires evidence. A short test drive on a Scamper is the moment of truth. And that is that a Lacros indeed cycles like a large-format E Bike. The curved handlebars and a comfortable saddle ensure a sitting position that is unmistakable. With a horizontal front fork, the bicycle steers easily without continuous over-correction. The suspension in the front fork and the slightly thicker tires effortlessly smooth out the bumpy cobblestone road we cycle on. And braking or shifting offer no surprises either. Electric cycling is fun on this folding bike. You keep moving but without tiring. And with a generous range you can get somewhere.
