Bowlus Road Chief: when it costs something

When you talk about American caravans, you usually immediately think of such an iconic Airstream. But there are other manufacturers of similar caravans out there. Airstream wasn't even the first of them. Take Bowlus Road Chief as an example. Anyone who looks at the special Wave Edition of the already quite luxurious Endless Highways model will see that America knows very well how to build luxury caravans.

Blank Aluminum

Bowlus Road Chief also often provides the caravan with a blank aluminum exterior. Protected against oxidation by a layer of varnish or lacquer. That is not surprising, because the founder of this company, Hawley Bowlus, was the first to market a caravan with such an exterior in 1934. The shape of the design was familiar to him, as he was an aircraft designer by profession. Then, after bankruptcy, his idea was taken over by a former employee and from this the Aitstream brand emerged. A number of years ago, the Bowlus Road Chief brand name and trademark rights were purchased by design enthusiast and car collector John Long. He restored an old model, founded a new company and then had a number of new models developed.

Two models

Bowlus Road Chief currently builds two models. The On the Road of 7,32 meters long and the Endless Highways of 7,92 meters. The shape of these models is special. If you were to turn the caravan upside down, it would look somewhat like Noah's Ark. This, together with the shiny blank aluminum exterior, will of course make you stand out. Furthermore, both models have four sleeping places and a kitchenette. In terms of price, they are, to say the least, in the higher segment. The On the Road is available from $135.000, the Endless Highway costs at least $185.000. What both models have in common is the streamline, four berths and a kitchen in the bow.

Bowlus Road Chief Wave Edition

The limited edition Wave Edition stands out because of the nautical style of the interior. Composed of dark and light wood, combined with white and blue upholstery. The sailcloth curtains complete the nautical look. By the way, wood decor is not just used. The tables and floor are made of high-quality walnut wood and the walls are finished with clear varnished birch wood. The two seating groups can be converted into two sleeping places. There are also two single beds at the pointed rear. The bathroom is also furnished exclusively and to a high standard. The entire caravan has a beautiful teak floor. The kitchen has aluminum cabinets and fronts and is equipped with all appliances. The price also has a nautical tint. At $225.000, the Bowlus Road Chief Wave Edition comes close to a luxury motor yacht.
