Buying a Camper: Everything You Need to Know for the Perfect Purchase

Do you want to buy a camper and dreaming of a life full of freedom on the road? A camper is the ideal choice for those who want to travel without being tied to fixed locations. Whether you are an experienced traveler or want to buy your first camper, there is a lot involved in buying a camper. In this guide, we will take you step by step through the process and share valuable tips to find the right camper that suits your travel style and budget.

Why Buy a Camper?

Buying a camper means investing in freedom, flexibility, and adventure. With a camper, you can leave at any time and enjoy unique destinations without being dependent on hotels or other accommodations. For many, a camper offers the chance to get closer to nature and travel with all the comforts of home.

Which Camper Suits You?

Campers come in many shapes and sizes. Before buying a camper, it is important to choose the right type. Some popular types are:

  • Van camper: Compact, easy to drive, and ideal for couples or solo travelers.
  • Semi-integrated: Spacious and comfortable with more amenities, perfect for longer holidays.
  • Alcove: Suitable for families thanks to extra sleeping space above the cabin.
  • Integrated: Luxurious and fully equipped, often chosen by experienced travelers looking for comfort.

What to Look for When Buying a Camper?

Buying a camper is a big investment, so it is important to be critical and pay attention to some important aspects:

  • Budget: Determine your budget and decide whether you want to buy a new or used camper.
  • Technical condition: Check the engine, brakes, and tires. If necessary, ask a specialist to inspect the camper.
  • Interior and amenities: Check if the camper is equipped with the right amenities, such as a kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping places.
  • Insurance and maintenance: Inquire about the costs of insurance and maintenance so that you are well prepared.

Where to Find the Best Camper Deals?

Whether you choose an authorized dealer, a second-hand marketplace, or a camper show, there are many places to buy a camper. Compare prices and always ask about maintenance history and warranty conditions.

When buying a camper a test drive can also give a good indication of whether the camper drives comfortably and meets your expectations.

alcove camperAlcove Camper: the space miracle for families

Campers come in four different types. Alcove campers, semi-integrated, integrated or bus campers. In that list, an alcove camper is the choice when as many sleeping places as possible are needed. With a fixed extension above the cabin, an extra double bed is created compared to other campers. A small ladder leads to a cozy bedroom, which is usually equipped with windows and a roof hatch for ventilation and a nice view. The living space in the motorhome camper remains intact with a curtain in front of it. Handy when the children go to bed a little earlier than mom and dad. An Alcove camper is therefore somewhat taller. It requires a bit more fuel to drive this alcove motorhome to a destination. The center of gravity is also somewhat higher, which sometimes affects the driving characteristics.

The construction of an alcove camper is usually based on a Fiat, Citroen, Peugeot, Mercedes, Renault, Ford or Volkswagen commercial vehicle and is made of sandwich panels. The exterior is often made of aluminum, but GFK is increasingly being used. Less susceptible to dents and resistant to hail. The roofs are therefore usually made of GFK. The walls are further insulated with foam and provided with a frame to give the camper, in which you participate in traffic, the necessary strength. Furthermore, an Alco wide-track chassis is used in the current generation of alcove campers. This consists of a wider rear axle, which improves the driving characteristics of the camper. Optically, it also looks a bit better than rear wheels that are far in the wheel arches. There are various models on the market from small alcove campers to very large alcove campers, both new alcove campers and used alcove campers. All well-known brands such as Bürstner, Knaus, Weinsberg, Rapido, McLouis, Roller Team, Sunlight, Chausson, Hobby or Hymer also have an extensive range of alcove campers in addition to bus campers and integrated campers.
