Anti-theft: extra security with Disklok

Anti-theft: extra security with Disklok

Campers are protected against theft by a steering wheel lock and most insurance companies also require a gearbox lock for campers above a certain value. You can create an additional barrier to protect your valuable possessions: with an after-market steering wheel lock, such as Disklok.

Strictly speaking, an additional steering lock is not necessary if your camper is insured against theft. But no one wants it if your camper vanishes the day before the holiday. An extra steering lock is a good deterrent. The standard steering lock, which is already installed at the factory, is no obstacle for the average car thief. That is why insurance companies require an extra lock on the gearbox for campers above 75.000 euros, such as the locks from Construct or Bearlock.

Only delay with lock

But even such professional locks offer no guarantee against theft, because ultimately every lock only delays theft: the SCM quality mark of locks approved by insurers means that such a lock must be able to withstand attacks with hand tools for three minutes. To make your camper more unattractive to the thieves' guild, you can create additional obstacles, such as an after-market steering lock. These usually consist of a long bracket that is clamped to the handlebars, after which the handlebars get stuck against the seat or windshield.

The disadvantage of such steering locks is that the bracket can also be used as a lever to force the steering lock with a strong jerk. In addition, such locks can be removed relatively easily: by sawing through the handlebars, for example.

Steering wheel lock from Disklok

The British brand Disklok takes a different approach. The steering lock consists of a circular hardened steel housing with two hinged parts, which enclose the entire steering wheel. A steel handle connects both parts and as soon as you press a cylinder lock, the Disklok is locked. The titanium cylinder lock cannot be drilled, partly due to its construction with internal loose discs. It can only be unlocked with the supplied key (3 pieces), after which you can remove the Disklok lock again.

Because the Disklok is loosely clamped around the steering wheel, the locking bar cannot - as with other steering wheel locks - be used as a lever to force the car's original steering lock. It is also impossible to steal the airbag, for example. Installing the lock is very user-friendly. Storing the lock is a slightly different story, as it is a fairly large device.

The Disklok is also SCM approved and must therefore withstand attacks with hand tools for three minutes. In independent tests this even works for 15 minutes. The most important effect, however, is theft prevention: the extra steering lock will allow thieves to move more quickly to easier prey.

The Disklok is available in three sizes (39, 41,5 and 44 cm) and is therefore suitable for steering wheels from 35 to 44 cm. You can measure yourself, but on the Disklok website you can also find the right lock based on the brand, type and year of construction of the camper.
