The popularity of bus campers: versatile all-rounders
Campers are hot; sales figures are skyrocketing – not only in the Netherlands, but also in neighboring countries. And of all types of campers, compact bus campers are responsible for the increase in sales figures. How is that possible?
Bus campers are not much larger than a large passenger car. They are as manoeuvrable as a shopping cart and if you want to escape the rain, you can speed towards the sunny south at 130 kilometers per hour - or more. And parking? This can be done in any village, or in the driveway next to your house. Leave work an hour earlier on Friday afternoon, take your weekend bag and go: that is the secret of the bus camper.
Long and short holidays
The ideal travel companion for camping holidays, of course, but also for a weekend away or a party with friends on the other side of the country. Because after a few glasses of wine you can just sleep in your own bed, in your mobile home. Even more than other campers, bus campers are truly multi-purpose.
Everything on board
Bus campers have everything on board, but on a few square meters. How about a kitchen, toilet/shower and a dinette where you can eat with three or four people. And of course a comfortable double bed with excellent mattresses on slatted bases. It's a bit of a puzzle with space, but the designers of the various camper brands succeed with flying colors. In Germany, bus campers are now the most popular camper variant and in Belgium it is also the 'camping bus' that is experiencing the biggest growth spurt. Many seniors clear out their passenger car and use their bus camper for shopping, family visits, city trips, cycling weekends and holidays.
Compact, extended van
The name 'bus camper' says it all. A complete camper interior is built in a compact van. Just like with 'normal' campers, the Fiat Ducato is most often used for this purpose, but the vans from Renault, Peugeot, Citroën and the new Mercedes Sprinter are also used for conversion into a camper van.
Space in bus campers
To create headroom, the camper brands opt for the elevated versions, possibly even combined with a lifting roof for two extra sleeping places. So you can even go out with four people. The lengths vary between 5,60 and 6,40 meters, with the longest bus camper having a bed placed lengthwise: single beds that can be transformed into a spacious double bed with an intermediate piece. If you leave out that intermediate piece, you can use the free space as a 'garage': for two bicycles or a scooter.
The shorter variants of bus campers have the bed across the width, with plenty of storage space underneath and there are also variants where two double beds are placed on top of each other to provide sleeping space for four people.
Special category: micro camper
A special category among bus campers is the micro camper, the 'little ones' among the bus campers such as the Adria Active, Karmann Danny or the Pössl Campster, which, unlike the popular Volskwagen California, sometimes also have a toilet on board.
It can also be even smaller, with the mini camper from CampUniq, a Dutch product that, with a lot of ingenuity and use of space, still offers a full-fledged camping shelter.
