Merger of Fiat and Peugeot: Stellantis is the new name

The Fiat-Chrysler group and the French PSA, which includes Peugeot and Citroen, have officially merged. The shareholders recently agreed to this marriage. The new company will be called Stellantis with its headquarters in Amsterdam.

Thanks to Stellantis from Mokum, almost all of us drive a Dutch camper from now on. About 70% of the campers are on a Fiat Ducato base, making the brand the main supplier in the camper country. Add to that some Peugeots and Citroëns and you arrive at more than three quarters of the flotilla of campers driving around in the Netherlands. The shareholders of Group PSA and Fiat Chrysler Autmobiles (FCA) agreed almost unanimously. Official approval of the merger plan by the European Commission was already given last December.

The merger brings the car brands Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Fiat, Jeep, Chrysler, Maserati and Alfa Romeo under the same parent company. The question is whether all brands will survive the merger. Due to the Corona pandemic, few new cars have been sold, which puts pressure on the development of new models. For example, Maserati and Alfa Romeo may find it difficult.

Stellantis, in which Fiat and Peugeot each have a 50% stake, will become the fourth largest car manufacturer in the world. Only Toyota, Volkswagen and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance are bigger. Stellantis' head office in Amsterdam is in addition to the legal head office of FCA, which is also located in our capital. The new 10-member board is headed by two well-known names. For the FCA this is chairman John Elkann. On behalf of PSA, this is vice-chairman Rober Peugeot. Both are heirs of the families that founded the car manufacturers that started it all, namely Fiat and Peugeot.
