Camping trend 2018: Buying a camper or caravan together
Research into the camping trend in 2018 shows that Dutch people who want to buy a camper or caravan are increasingly purchasing this together with someone else. Providers are responding to this trend; The supply of campers in 2018 is higher than ever and shows an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. In the period January to mid-June 2018, there was also a strong increase in searches for a new or used camper or caravan on camperscaravans.nl.
A large proportion of Dutch people buy a camper or caravan together with friends or family, with campers in particular being popular for part-time ownership. Younger people in particular buy a camper or caravan together. Under the age of 30, 20% indicate that they buy this product together with family members, with another family (15%) or with friends (5%).
New camping trend
Research agency Panelwizard investigated the behavior of Dutch campers on behalf of Marktplaats. The results show new holiday trends. Two camping types are on the rise: young families who have purchased a caravan/camper for the children (Family Minded: 14%) and travelers who go out for a longer period to see as much of the world as possible (World Travelers: 12% ). Both camping types are newcomers in the top five camping types this year compared to the same survey in 2016.
Top 5 Dutch camping types
Going on holiday with a caravan or camper can come in all shapes and sizes. That is why there are different types of camping for caravan or camper owners:
- Happy Campers (57%) – camping mainly because they enjoy it and want to enjoy the freedom.
- Road trippers (28%) – these campers travel from campsite to campsite.
- Family Minded (14%) – camping with the children and have built the camper or caravan completely around that.
- Socials (13%) – these campers love making new friends at the campsite.
- World Travelers (12%) – these campers travel for as long as possible to see as much of the world as possible with their camper or caravan.
Why a camper or caravan?
The most important reason for going with a camper or caravan is the security of a place to sleep (52%) and the luxury of your own house (50%). Not being dependent on others (49%), flexibility and freedom (48%) and relaxing in the outdoors (48%) also appear to be common reasons for going out. Although campers go on holiday for rest and relaxation, it sometimes also causes a lot of stress. Dutch people experience the most stress when they have to park in tight places (20%) or drive in narrow streets (12%).
