Truma Smart: budget caravan movers

Pushing and pulling to put a caravan in place? That is very outdated in 2020. Caravan movers ensure that you get rid of that hassle: no arguing with your partner, you keep your back intact and you are no longer dependent on willing neighbors.

That's what you'll see: a beautiful but cramped pitch at the campsite, between two beautiful green hedges and a curb. Seasoned caravanners already put such a place on the reserve list in their minds. Even though the view is great, even though you are close to the sanitary building, the campsite restaurant and the children's playground...

Without effort

However, this is no longer necessary: caravan movers have been around for years and new models appear on the market every year. And with that you can put the caravan in place without any effort, with a few clicks on the remote control.

Such a caravan mover is mounted under the chassis, close to both caravan wheels. The operation is simple: once the caravan has been disconnected, you place two electrically driven rollers against both caravan tires - manually or automatically - and then drive the caravan to your pitch with a few pushes of a button. Or the other way around: from the spot to the towbar of the car, after which you only have to lower the drawbar by turning the crank of the nose wheel.

Soft start

What is important when purchasing such a caravan mover is whether it fits under the chassis, whether it is heavy enough for the loaded weight of your caravan, whether the motor is strong enough for slopes and curbs and finally: whether it is equipped with 'soft start'. This means that the motorcycle starts to drive very controlled from a standstill. This is often lacking on the cheaper systems and then the caravan shoots forward: before you know it you have a scratch on the bumper of your car when coupling it.

Truma recently launched two new models of caravan movers that meet all the above specifications: the manually operated Smart M and the automatic Smart A. In this case, manually operated means that you place both aluminum rollers against the caravan tires with a handle - with the Smart A this happens automatically. , at the push of a button. As soon as the drive rollers are against the caravan tires, the operation is identical: you can maneuver your caravan in all directions with the wireless remote control. Even up hills, up to slopes of 13 percent, and a curb is also no problem for both Smart caravan movers. And these Truma movers both have that 'soft start'. Also handy: as soon as you release the button, your caravan immediately comes to a standstill - so you can really maneuver within the square millimeter.

For all caravans

The Smart-M is suitable for all types of caravans regardless of the chassis (except tandem axles), up to 1800 kilos and the Smart-A goes a little further: up to 2.000 kilos. The difference with the more expensive models is that the Smart movers have one speed - so you cannot 'accelerate' as with the more expensive Truma XT. The Smart M weighs 33 kilos, the Smart-A a kilo less. Truma gives - just like its top model - a 5-year warranty and from this February they will be available for sale at caravan dealers. Price from 1.199 for the manually operated Smart M and 1.699 for the automatic caravan mover. Then there will be another 2-3 hours and then additional installation costs at your dealer, plus a battery. And so as not to put too much pressure on the loading capacity of your caravan, we recommend a lightweight lithium battery, such as the PowerExtreme X10 (2,1 kg, approximately 295 euros).
