VW T6.1 Campers: cleaner and more economical

To meet the latest emission standards, the VW T6.1 will receive new engines. They are both cleaner and more economical, although this only saves half a liter of fuel for every 100 kilometers.

VW T6.1: 50% Cleaner

Since January 1, 2021, passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Europe must comply with the EU6d-ISM-FCM standard, also abbreviated to EU 4 AP. Volkswagen is therefore equipping its VW T6.1 with a new generation of engines. Most striking are a new exhaust filter and double AdBlue injection. The Multivan, Transporter, Caravelle and California therefore emit up to 50% less harmful gases. The engines with engine code EA288Nutz have been thoroughly overhauled.

AdBlue TwinDosing

By moving the particulate filter from under the bottom to near the engine, the filter works better. This is because the temperature near the engine is a lot higher. In addition, a double injection with AdBlue has also been added. Volkswagen calls this system TwinDosing. Despite the double injection, the new VW T6.1 still lasts longer with a tank of AdBlue. The VW T6.1 is also the first VAG product to receive the new DeNox 5.3 system. A second SCR catalyst placed under the bottom. Both catalysts do their work at different temperatures. The idea behind this is that one of the two is always busy. Even with a heavy load, such as driving a fully loaded camper, with a trailer or at high speeds. The operation is optimal under all these circumstances.

It is the first time that this configuration, which comes from the passenger car world, has been used in a light commercial vehicle. It makes a significant difference in emissions, especially in city traffic. In addition, the Bi-turbo also works differently. This increases the power of the 2 liter TDI from 146 kW to 150 kW, a generous 204 hp. The power remains the same for all other engine variants. The VW T6.1 110 Kw is the first engine to be equipped with the new system. The VW T7 will also be equipped with this system. The introduction of the T7 is scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter of 2021. The new Volkswagen bus will initially only be available as a Multivan. That is why production of the T6.1 continues during that period.
