Chip tuning a camper: sense or nonsense

Chip tuning a camper: sense or nonsense

Chip tuning is a way to make an engine deliver better performance. More powerful, faster, smoother and more economical. Which camper doesn't want that. Chip tuning or remapping seems to be an excellent method for a better driving experience.

All engines have maximum performance. Extensively tested in the factory to provide a reliable power source. A safety margin is also set for this. The performance of an engine is limited so that no engine damage occurs under difficult conditions or with poor fuel. This safety margin is usually well above the limit of what the engine can actually deliver.

Optimizing the parameters

Almost all engines from this century, such as the common-rail diesel in a camper, have an ECU module. This “computer” takes care of quite a bit. The most important tasks are: the amount of fuel injected, the moment of injection, which is important for consumption and power delivery, and the turbo pressure. The purpose of chip tuning is to optimize the parameters on the ECU so that the engine's potential is better achieved. This translates into a smooth-feeling engine that delivers power when you need it.

Remapping therefore seems to be a fully accepted upgrade. It also often takes place in the factory. Motors are supplied in different capacities, while the basic block is identical. But there can also be disadvantages. However, it is up to you whether these apply.

5 – 10% more economical

In general, a diesel becomes about 5 – 10% more efficient after the intervention, unless you actually use the extra power. When you drive or accelerate faster, consumption will increase sooner. With the same driving style as before the chip tuning, the engine is guaranteed to be more economical.

Margin of safety

Chip tuning increases the engine's performance and therefore reduces the safety margin. In case of bad fuel or oil, poor maintenance or extreme driving behavior, this can damage the engine. But here too, if there is good oil in the engine, you fill up with fuel properly, the camper is maintained and you drive somewhat normally, then this is no problem at all.

Wear

With more power, there are parts that run harder or are used more and therefore wear out faster. For example the turbo. If the engine produces extra torque, the turbo will also have to run at a higher speed to provide the extra fuel with extra oxygen. This turbo also has a wide margin and a good tuner will ensure that it remains within the factory values. The fact remains that it is not advisable to run maximum power for a longer period of time. However, for a camper, that risk is small. You don't rush quickly, before you know it the refrigerator bursts open and you are ankle deep in food. Here too, if you continue to drive normally there is no additional wear.

Chip tuning at DTC Tuning

Chip tuning is not something you should have done yourself or by a willing neighbor. It is not a complicated procedure, but it is quite specialized. DTC Tuning in Enkhuizen is a renowned tuner that also focuses on campers. With years of experience in chip tuning cars, boats, tractors and trucks, you are assured of an intervention that brings out the best in your engine without the risk of damage or excessive wear. Curious about what chip tuning from DTCTuning can deliver? Then look up your car/motor combination online and both the gain in performance and the costs will be clearly displayed.
