Campsite etiquette: unwritten camping rules

More and more Dutch people are discovering the joy of camping. Enjoy the outdoors and the simplicity of camping life. However, there are also rules that apply during your holiday. In addition to the rules that apply to each campsite, there are also unwritten camping rules: camping etiquette.

Freedom happiness! Enjoy going out with your caravan, camper or tent, with your friends or family. Since you are not the only one who wants to enjoy a well-deserved rest, certain manners apply at the campsite. In short, it simply means that you take each other into account. We give you an overview of common mutual expectations at the campsite.

Friendliness

Kindness is an important key for a pleasant holiday. This can be done by briefly greeting people when they walk past your camping spot, but also by having a quick chat with your neighbors. Who knows, you might even get useful tips for a fun outing or an interesting sight. Are new people coming to the campsite? You might be able to give them a helping hand, for example by pushing the caravan into the right place. Or if it starts to rain heavily, you can help your neighbors who are away for the day by drying the laundry and chairs in the awning.

boundaries

Boundaries are important, especially at the campsite. That is literally the case with the boundaries of your camping spot and those of others. For example, it is not perceived as pleasant when you walk across someone else's camping spot, even if that makes your walk to the toilet building shorter. Also make sure that you do not park your camper or caravan too close to your neighbor. And also that you do not completely fill your camping spot.

Boundaries also apply in social interactions. Give each other space. That means no extended staring. And gently ask whether your neighbors need a friendly chat. If not, just good friends, everyone is different after all.

If all goes well, your children will have a wonderful time at the campsite. They can play, run and make new friends there. Make sure that your children do not disturb others.

Your dog

Are you bringing a dog? Logically, that is of course completely part of it! We previously gave tips on how to... can prepare your dog on a camping holiday and tips on how your dog can handle it comfortable at the campsite can have.

As for campsite etiquette, make sure your dog is with you, on a leash. This is a fixed rule at many campsites anyway. A dog that wanders around the campsite is not desirable. Pay attention to your dog's behavior. For example, you won't make friends with a constantly barking dog. And don't leave your dog alone at the campsite unless you are sure he is well behaved.

Sound – peace

At the campsite you often have less privacy than at home. Your tent, camper or caravan is noisier than your own house and you usually live closer to your neighbors. That is why there are quite a few unwritten camping rules surrounding noise. The most important thing is: keep the sound at an acceptable volume. Whether you're on the phone, watching television, or putting on some nice music. This is especially true during the quiet hours, early in the morning and in the evening. For example, be careful not to close the doors of the sanitary facilities too hard.

Keep tidy

It is wonderful to completely relax in nature. Therefore, make sure that you interact well with your environment. Clean up your waste and take it to the appropriate waste bins. More and more campsites are separating waste: even better for the environment! A nice rule here is: everything you brought with you, you take back with you. Actually, it is even better if you leave your camping spot better than you found it.

Sanitary units

Unwritten camping rules also apply when using the sanitary facilities. Have you washed dishes in the sinks? Make sure you do not leave any food scraps in the drain. Leave showers, toilets and sinks clean.

Does your camper or caravan have its own sanitary facilities? Only empty the toilet cassette in the designated location and never use the clean water hose to rinse it clean. Make sure you leave this place clean. Very nice for the person who comes after you.

Quite logical

You read it: these rules are actually very logical. And if everyone adheres to these unwritten camping rules, then nothing will stand in the way of a wonderful camping holiday!
