Driving your camper or caravan: which driving license?

Driving your camper or caravan: which driving license?

The popularity of campers and caravans is at an all-time high. This year too, many new camping enthusiasts have joined us. And the search behavior is also on our website grown enormously this year. However, before you buy a camper or caravan, it is good to know what the rules are on the road. And specifically: which driving license do you need?

Up to a certain weight, you can drive a camper or caravan on the road with your normal B driving license. However, there is a limit after which you need an additional driver's license. We have listed for you what the rules are in this regard.

Caravan driving license

A caravan is legally classified as a trailer. To be allowed to drive it, your B driving license is sufficient if:

  • Your caravan is not heavier than 750 kg.
  • The total weight of your car and caravan does not exceed 3500 kg.

You can find the weight in the documents of your caravan and your car. Is your caravan heavier? Then you need a BE driver's license, the trailer driver's license. By the way, even if you are not yet fully loaded and you are traveling alone, you still need a BE driving license for heavier caravans.

Driver's license for camper

For smaller, light campers, your B driver's license is sufficient. This is the case if:

  • Your camper is not heavier than 3500 kg.
  • Your camper has no more than 8 seats for passengers.

You can find the maximum permitted mass on the registration certificate of your camper. This weight includes the camper with all luggage and occupants. The registration certificate also describes the maximum number of people the camper can transport. It rarely happens that the last number exceeds the 8 people. (If this is the case, you need a D driver's license.)

C1 driver's license

Is the camper heavier than 3500, but lighter than 7500 kg? Then you need a C1 driving license. For this driving license you must obtain a theory certificate and take a practical exam. C1 is actually a kind of lighter version of the C driving license (the truck driving licence). Since 2013, you have been allowed to take driving lessons and take an exam for the C1 driver's license.

C driver's license

Is your camper heavier than 7500 kg? Then you need a C driving license. The trailers coupled to this vehicle may have a maximum permitted mass of 750 kg. You may then transport up to 8 people, excluding the driver.

A medical examination is required for both the C1 driving license and the C driving license. This is repeated every 5 years.
