Kamperland: with the camper to Zeeland

Anyone traveling through our country with a camper should definitely not skip Zeeland. You get more hours of sunshine there than anywhere else in the Netherlands, nowhere else will you find more Michelin-starred restaurants, and nowhere else can you enjoy the beach and the sea so beautifully from your camper. CampersCaravans.nl traveled with a camper to Zeeland for a tour of Noord-Beveland and the town with the appropriate name Kamperland.

For our camper, the area around Kamperland is a pleasant region. The roads on the Noord-Beveland peninsula are wide and quiet, the land looks friendly with endless vistas that reflect the cheerful nature of the Zeeland population. In many places, whimsical cloud formations hang threateningly above the neatly combed fields, bordered by trees that seem to be arranged in military formation. The houses are modest, the farms are beautiful, the tranquility is all-encompassing.

Campus

The name Kamperland comes from Campus, the original name of this town of 2000 inhabitants, which is mentioned in history books even before the year 1000. Campus is the Latin name for 'field' or 'enclosed land' and is also the basis of our word camping. As almost everywhere in Zeeland, recreation with a camper is permitted to a limited extent. Overnight stays on, or near the beach are out of the question. Standing in a regular parking lot is only allowed as long as the sun is visible. And fortunately, it shines abundantly.

Schotsman

In the vicinity of Kamperland you will find the 200-hectare nature reserve 'De Schotsman'. On this former sandbank you will find countless salt marshes, forests and dunes, where you might be surprised by grazing, formidable-looking cattle, the Scottish Highlanders. These hardy farm animals are quite shy and therefore public-friendly. Nevertheless, nature organizations advise not to seek out the impressive cattle and only enjoy them from a distance.

Bird lovers come here to add the goshawk, the willow warbler or the buzzard to their lists. The flora of the Schotsman also appears to be special.

Camperpark Zeeland

We choose to go to the nearby Camperpark Zeeland. There are 100 pitches for motorhomes here; other forms of camping are not even allowed. There is a self-service for check-in and check-out where you can pay with a debit card. It is wonderfully quiet here. You hear many birds and never airplanes, you see more electric bicycles than cars here, and the villages exude a contented, relaxed, somewhat serene atmosphere.

Around us, we see many different shades of green; the approaching autumn colors fields gray and trees slowly in all shades of brown. Time has not stood still here, but around Kamperland, it occasionally takes a rest.

Veere

Towards evening, we head to Veere, just across the water. We park in the beautiful (paid) parking lot by the Veerse Meer and walk into the town. Veere is a remarkably well-preserved medieval town with a marina in the town center, charming shops, cobblestone streets, and nice restaurants in buildings with classic stepped gables. Tourism is important here, but fortunately, it is not dominant in the streetscape. You won't see man-sized ice cream cones outside cafeterias, no blushing baker's dolls on the sidewalk, and no screaming advertisements for Chinese trinkets. Veere cherishes its centuries-old, blushing townscape, which radiates health.

Oosterscheldekering

The next day, we drive leisurely north. We stop at Neeltje Jans and then next to the Oosterscheldekering at other pleasant parking lots close to the North Sea beach. There, we marvel at the beauty of the sea and the harmoniously rotating windmills in the landscape, all moving at the same pace.

The sea can be merciless here, but now it is mercilessly beautiful. With a palette of blue, green, gray, and white, with an occasional breaking white foamy crest and a single fishing boat on the horizon. This land was made by people, Zeelanders who did not give up but managed to adapt to nature, without sacrificing its beauty. After the impressive Oosterscheldekering, we continue north, curious about what else Zeeland has in store for our camper.

Topography

Kamperland is located on a peninsula, Noord-Beveland, which is just above the Zeeland island of Walcheren. To the south lies the Veerse Meer. To the north, you will find the Oosterschelde, and to the west, the North Sea. To travel north, you use the main dam of the Delta Works, the Oosterscheldekering, which includes the famous artificial island Neeltje Jans. Furthermore, the peninsula can be reached via the N256, which runs from Zierikzee to Goes.

On the island, you will find five villages, with the village of Kamperland centrally located on the island. The other villages are mainly known for housing large marinas. Due to its location on the wide waters of the Oosterschelde and the sheltered waters of the Veerse Meer, Kamperland is a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. This is especially evident in the marinas of Colijnsplaat, Kortgene, and Kats, which are teeming with boats.
