Kamperland: to Zeeland by camper

Kamperland: to Zeeland by camper

Anyone traveling through our country with a camper should definitely not miss Zeeland. You get more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the Netherlands, nowhere else will you find more star restaurants and nowhere else can you enjoy the beach and sea so beautifully from your camper. CampersCaravans.nl took the camper to Zeeland for a tour of Noord-Beveland and the town with the appropriate name Kamperland.

The Kamperland area is a nice area for our camper. The roads on the Noord-Beveland peninsula are wide and quiet, the country looks friendly with endless views that reflect the cheerful nature of the Zeeland population. In many places, erratic cloud formations hang menacingly above the tightly combed fields, lined with trees that appear to be arranged in military battle array. The houses are modest, the farms are beautiful, the tranquility is all-consuming.

Campus

The name Kamperland comes from Campus, the original name of this town of 2000 inhabitants, which has been mentioned in history books since before the year 1000. Campus is the Latin name for 'field' or 'enclosed land' and is also the basis of our word campsite. Like almost everywhere in Zeeland, recreation with the Camper is allowed to a limited extent. Spending the night on or near the beach is not allowed. Parking in a regular parking lot is only allowed as long as the sun can be seen. And luckily it shines brightly.

Scotsman

In the Kamperland area you will find the 200 hectare nature reserve 'De Schotsman'. On this former sandbank you will find countless salt marshes, forests and dunes, where you can be surprised by grazing, dangerous-looking cattle, the Scottish highlanders. These hardy farm animals are quite shy and therefore public-friendly. Nevertheless, nature organizations advise against visiting the impressive cattle and only enjoying them from a distance.

Bird lovers come here to add the hawk, the warbler or the buzzard to their lists. The flora of the Scotsman also seems to be special.

With the camper to Zeeland.

Camper park Zeeland

We choose to go to the nearby Camperpark Zeeland. There are 100 places for campers here, other forms of camping are not even allowed. There is a self-service check-in and check-out area where you can pay with your debit card. It is wonderfully quiet here. You hear a lot of birds and never planes, you see more electric bicycles than cars here and the villages exude a contented, relaxed, somewhat hushed atmosphere.

We see many different shades of green around us, the falling autumn turns fields gray and trees slowly turn all shades of brown. Time has not stood still here, but occasionally rests around Kamperland.

Veere

Towards the evening we head to Veere, just across the street. We park in the beautiful (paid) parking lot at the Veerse Meer and walk into the town. Veere is a remarkably well-preserved medieval town with a marina in the city center, cute shops, cobblestone streets and fine restaurants in buildings with classic stepped gables. Tourism is important here, but fortunately it is not dominant in the street scene. You don't see man-sized ice creams outside cafeterias here, no blushing baker's dolls on the sidewalk and no screaming advertisements for Chinese knick-knacks. Veere is careful with her age-old, blushing cityscape, which radiates with health.

Oosterschedekering

The next day we drive quietly to the North. We stop at Neeltje Jans and then next to the Oosterscheldekering at other pleasant parking spaces near the North Sea beach. There we are amazed by the beauty of the sea and the harmoniously rotating windmills in the landscape.

The sea can be merciless here, but now it is mercilessly beautiful. With a palette of blue, green, gray and white, with the occasional breaking white foam and a single fishing boat on the horizon. This country was created by people, Zeelanders who did not give up but managed to put their spin on nature, without sacrificing its beauty. After the impressive Oosterscheldekering we continue north, curious to see what else Zeeland has in store for our camper.

topography

Kamperland is located on a peninsula, Noord-Beveland, which is located just above the Zeeland island of Walcheren. The Veerse Meer is located on the south side. On the north side you will find the Oosterschelde and on the west side the North Sea. To travel north you use the most important dam of the Delta Works, the Oosterscheldekering, containing the famous Neeltje Jans working island. The peninsula can also be reached via the N256 that runs from Zierikzee to Goes.

North Beveland

You will find five villages on the island, with the village of Kamperland in the center of the island. The other villages are best known because they house a large marina. Due to its location on the spacious waters of the Oosterschelde and the sheltered waters of the Veerse Meer, Kamperland is a popular place for water sports enthusiasts. You especially see this in the marinas of Colijnsplaat, Kortgene and Kats, where there are plenty of boats.
