Croatia: island bliss on Krk

Forty kilometers long, the highest point at 568 meters and everywhere you look: Mediterranean blue. That is Krk (pronounced: kurk), a bounty island in the Adriatic Sea. Including rustling surf from the rolling pebbles…

The capital of the island bears the same name: Krk. Here you will see plenty of Roman remains, but because the water in the Mediterranean Sea rises by a millimeter every year, many memories are now below sea level. You can still discover a few of these remains in the cellars of Café-bar Volsonis, a small bar with an intimate courtyard, surrounded by medieval city walls.

Streets of gleaming marble streets lead to Romanesque and Gothic churches, including the 13th-century Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. Also special are the Glagolitic inscriptions in the buildings, from the 11th century. Nice terraces can be found on the central square under the clock tower, and just behind it, with a sea view. Also nice: it's only a fifteen-minute walk to camping Krk, along the boulevard by the water. And camping Jezevac is also within walking distance, on the other side.

Perfect places to extend your caravan legs. And: Krk has a permanent connection to the Croatian mainland: a bridge for which you only pay a few euros in toll for the outward journey.

The trawl net overboard

Another nice town is Punat, with its beautiful promenade along the harbor.
There you can take a mini-cruise to the monastic island of Kosljun: not much larger than two football fields, with a small cathedral and a Franciscan monastery where five monks still live.

From Punat you can also take a great fishing excursion. The Zlatopruzica is a 52-year-old fishing trawler. At dusk, the trawl net goes overboard. When it is pulled up, shrimp, langoustines, fish, squid and octopuses appear, which immediately disappear into the galley. And a little later you are having dinner, on board: it couldn't be fresher, and it tastes really great, along with a delicious plastic cup of Zlatina wine, from the vineyards around the mountain village of Vbrnik (pronounced: Vuh-bur-nik).

That town is also nice to visit. You won't find narrower streets on the island: 43 centimeters – hold your stomach in. And if you're there: reserve a table in the evening at restaurant Nada, with a great view of the Croatian mainland – highly recommended.

Must do

You have to believe it: the mud near the village of Soline is said to have a healing effect. Mudfight! Or try one of the massages on the beach.

With the kids

Rent a boat or go kayaking for a day. There are rental companies all over the island.

Must taste
