Croatia: island happiness on Krk

Croatia: island happiness on Krk

Forty kilometers long, the highest point at 568 meters and everywhere you look: Mediterranean blue. That is Krk (pronounced cork), a bounty island in the Adriatic Sea. Including a rustling surf through the rolling pebbles…

The capital of the island bears the same name: Krk. Here you will see plenty of Roman remains, but because the water in the Mediterranean Sea rises by a millimeter every year, many memories are now below the water surface. You can still discover some of these remains in the cellars of Café-bar Volsonis, a small bar with an intimate courtyard, walled by medieval city walls.

The island of Krk

Lanes of gleaming marble streets lead to Romanesque and Gothic churches, including the 13th-century Assumption Cathedral. Also special are the Glagolitic inscriptions in the buildings, from the 11th century. You will find nice terraces on the central square under the bell tower, and just behind it, with a view of the sea. Also nice: it is only a fifteen-minute walk to Krk campsite, along the boulevard along the water. And Jezevac campsite is also within walking distance, on the other side.

Perfect places to stretch out the caravan legs. And: Krk has a fixed connection with the Croatian mainland: a bridge where you only pay a few euros toll for the outward journey.

The dragnet overboard

Another nice town is Punat, with its beautiful promenade along the harbor.
There you can take a mini-cruise to the monk island of Kosljun: not much bigger than two football fields, with a cathedral and a Franciscan monastery where five monks still live.

From Punat you can also make a great fishing excursion. The Zlatopruzica is a 52 year old fishing trawler. At dusk the dragnet is thrown overboard. When you lift it up, shrimps, langoustines, fish, squids and octopuses emerge, which immediately disappear to the galley. And a little later you are having your meal on board: it couldn't be fresher, and it tastes really great, together with a delicious plastic cup of Zlatina wine, from the vineyards around the mountain village of Vbrnik (pronounced: Vuh-bur-nik).

That town is also nice to visit. You will not encounter narrower streets on the island: 43 centimeters – hold your stomach. And while you are there: reserve a table in the evening at the Nada restaurant, with a great view of mainland Croatia – highly recommended.
