The Basque Country is located in northern Spain, nestled between the Pyrenees, the Bay of Biscay and the Spanish hinterland. Bilbao: cultural highlight

The highlight of the cultural fireworks is, of course, Bilbao, the city of design and… the Guggenheim museum. Once a drab industrial city, Bilbao is now mentioned in the list of popular city trips: a trendy place where gastronomy, art and culture come together. And that is certainly not least due to the Guggenheim museum, which attracts 1 million visitors annually.

Locals especially praise the Nervión river (in Basque: Nerbioi) that runs through the city. Once it was an open sewer with all the colors of the rainbow, due to the dumped chemicals from the industrial areas. After a major renovation, it is now an important lifeline that gives the city more appeal. With wonderful places to relax, elegant quays and plenty of entertainment on the water.

Tradition and hospitality

The Basques fill their country with a great sense of tradition and hospitality. And with that hospitality, of course, comes: food. You can enjoy delicious fish dishes on terraces in cozy, intimate fishing villages. Forget tapas, because here you can enjoy Pintxos: delicious mini dishes that go perfectly with a glass of cava.

In the three capitals Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria-Gasteiz you will even find special Pintxos tours where you can enjoy delicacies displayed behind a glass pane until the early hours.
Basque cuisine is world-renowned and it seems as if every Basque behind the stove turns into a professional chef, with delicacies to lick your fingers off. Choose fish or meat in an Erretegiak (grill restaurant) or visit a Sagardotegiak (cider house).

Or you can opt for the typical atmosphere of a Rioja winery, where in addition to wine, you can also find delicious menus. And we haven't even mentioned the festivals and sporting events: typical Basque sports such as Pelota, Jai-alai or Pala, where bets are placed with great emotion – and commotion. Basque Country? It just has it all.
