De Groote Peel National Park
A special nature reserve is De Groote Peel National Park, the smallest national park in the Netherlands full of grand nature. The area is mainly known for peat extraction, which has left its mark on this raised bog area. Open plains are interspersed with water, heath, birch forests, and sand ridges, making this landscape a paradise for the more than ninety bird species that have chosen this area as a breeding ground. From the little grebe to the water rail and from the bluethroat to the stonechat. The best way to visit De Groote Peel is on foot. Many hiking trails have been laid out for this purpose, including over the boardwalks, and from the observation tower, you have a beautiful view of this landscape.

Horse riding in De Meinweg National Park
A covered wagon ride or horseback riding through De Meinweg National Park. An unforgettable experience. The park is located east of Roermond and covers an area of no less than 1,800 hectares. Peace, space and green nature with dozens of bridle paths. On the edge of the nature park is Rijstal Venhof riding school, where you can book guided outdoor rides and covered wagon tours. The terrace in nature is another part of the riding school. A leafy outdoor area to fully recharge after a brisk walk.

Taste beer in Weert's city brewery
De Brouwschuur is the location of the Weerter Stadsbrouwerij. Here you can taste the most special beers such as the Doef van d’n Daeke, Weert dialect for ‘Black Crow’. Or drink a Bockie Bè, a bottom-fermented bock beer. Don't skip the Dae Willich either, a strong one with an alcohol percentage of 11 percent. However, master brewer Erwin Strijbosch does even more. He guides other brewers in the brewery, develops recipes for others, and you can brew your own beer here, according to your own recipe, with the installation of the Brouwschuur. A trendy place to be in a former smelter.

Island walk in the Meuse
On an island between two branches of the Meuse lie the old fortified town of Stevensweert and the village of Ohé en Laak. The island is about 5 kilometers long and 2.5 km wide. You can walk a clearly signposted hiking route of about 12 kilometers. You will then pass Walburg Castle, Hasselholt Castle and the Sint Rochus Chapel. The walk starts and ends at De Hompesche Molen in Stevensweert. Shorter is also possible. A round trip of Ohé en Laak is only 7 kilometers long and the round trip of Stevensweert is only 6 kilometers. Nice to see in Stevensweert are the old fortifications, part of which has been restored to its former glory. The route is available at the VVV Midden-Limburg.

Boating on the Maasplassen
Rent a boat or embark on a round trip. You can do this on the Maasplassen. From the Maas towns of Maasbracht, Wessem and Thorn you can take a tour boat onto the Maas, and in Roermond, during the summer, you can take a daily round trip of over an hour from the Roerkade. The Maasplassen form the most beautiful boating area for every water sports enthusiast. Here you can swim, surf, sail, sup, dive, row or canoe. Thrill-seekers choose fast activities such as flyboarding, water skiing or wakeboarding. But doing nothing at all is also an option, on one of the beautiful day beaches or on the terraces of the trendy beach clubs you can find here.

Dragon village Beesel
Right on the German border lies the village of Beesel, known for its dragon slaying. An open-air theater spectacle held once every seven years at Nieuwenbroeck Castle. The oldest known performance dates from 1736. After the performances, there is a historical parade with a fire-breathing dragon 14 meters long. The last edition of the Dragon Slaying was in 2016, so you will have to wait until the summer of 2023 for a new performance. But even without dragon slaying, Beesel is worth a visit, if only for the car-free border crossing where you can cycle through the greenery to Germany.

Thorn, the white town
Feminism avant la lettre. The mini-state of Thorn was governed by women for centuries. It was peaceful and prosperous. Until Napoleon, a man, came and ruined it. Thorn is neat and tidy these days. Prosperous even. But once it was different. The residents could not pay the taxes that were collected with the arrival of Napoleon. The more windows a house had on the street side, the higher the amount the tax authorities demanded. With rubble from destroyed monastery buildings, they therefore bricked up their windows. And with a layer of whitewash, that shame was concealed. Only since 1842 has Thorn formally been part of the Netherlands; until 1794 it was even a separate country. A mini-state where a woman held sway. The permanent exhibition of museum Het Land van Thorn offers an insight into the remarkable history of this corner of Central Limburg.
