Camping in France: explore Provence
A favorite country of us Dutch: France. And a beautiful area in this country is Provence. It is a beautiful area full of mountains, glacial valleys and nice towns. Lavender and endless fields full of sunflowers provide plenty of color. And what about the Grand Canyon du Verdon? After the American Grand Canyon, this is the largest gorge in the world.
Verdon Grand Canyon
Seven hundred meters deep and over twenty kilometers. That is the Grand Canyon du Verdon, after the Grand Canyon in America it is the largest gorge on earth. With dizzying abysses, where it is only with difficulty that you can see the river flowing all the way down. In some places it is no wider than eight meters.
Flamingos and horses
Provence is located in the southeast of France, between the Italian border and the Rhone Valley. The area consists of a large number of provinces, such as the Bouches-du-Rhône, known for its saltwater marshes and the beaches of the Camargue. With a bit of luck you will encounter flamingos and wild horses here.
Mont Ventoux
The Var is also special, an area that was formed millions of years ago by ferocious volcanic eruptions. The smallest department of Provence is Vaucluse, where thousands of cyclists compete every year with the almost 2.000 meter high Mont Ventoux.
Bouillabaisse
Beautiful cities are Cannes, Nice and Marseille - the latter is the birthplace of the Bouillabaisse: the richly filled fish soup with toasted bread and garlic sauce aïoli. In the 'Vieux Port' you will find countless bistros and fish restaurants where delicious soup is made fresh every day. A few more culinary highlights include roast chicken from the oven and the French apple pie Tarte aux Pommes.
Vincent van Gogh
Lavender lovers should visit Dignes-les-Bains in summer, the capital of lavender. In the first weekend of August, the lavender harvest is celebrated here with a five-day festival. Antique collectors can visit Isle sur la Sorgue in Provence: a beautiful village bursting with antique shops.
A nice place for a picnic is nearby: the Roman ruins in Saint-Remy-de-Provence. Cheese, baguette, some fresh fruit... Then you will automatically feel like Vincent van Gogh - he even lived here for a while!
