Small budget, but still want to go on holiday? It's possible!

Appie Wijma from Opende, Groningen, started a campsite for low-income individuals last year. And this year, he's taking it up a notch. Given the amount of donations coming in, Appie can even offer all-inclusive holidays.

The benefactor, who is not well-off himself, started this initiative with the motto: 'What I have, I give away'. What started as a small idea has grown very quickly. The intention was to offer four tents, but thanks to free tents and materials, it has become many times that.

From new clothes, bags of crisps, various bottles of drinks, cheese, you name it. A car full of bags arrives every day. In fact, last year guests were dependent on small tents, and this year they can stay in luxurious folding caravans and caravans. Also,

Appie continues: “I encounter so much poverty,” Appie continues, “also because I run the ‘food garden’. I have a soft spot for people who are less fortunate. I cannot stand injustice. And then you hear from those children that they have never been on holiday. I just want to give all those families a carefree week.”

A lot of work done

In the past year, Appie has done a lot of work to make his guests happy. “We got a completely new fence, installed and painted a playground. We have been working here with all hands on deck and I am very satisfied now.”

The guests are overjoyed. “I find it cozy here and it's also fun for our daughter,” says one of the guests. “She's playing happily and is having a great time. That's wonderful to see.” The family would not have gone on holiday this summer if they hadn't been able to stay with Appie.

Campsite owner Appie does not plan to stop, because he gets a lot of satisfaction from it: “You don't get a cent richer from it, because it's a lot of work. But still, it gives you so much richness.”

Guests are welcome for one full week at Appie's campsite. Booking is no longer possible: the campsite is full for this season.
