On holiday in Italy: Relaxing in Bolzano

Are you going on holiday to Italy? Then also visit Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol. The city combines Austrian cosiness with La Vita Bella of Italy – the good life. And if you're heading towards Lake Garda, Bolzano is also a wonderful stopover to catch your breath.

Narrow streets and charming squares: it's not hard to fall in love with Bolzano, that beautiful city at the foot of the Italian Dolomites. On the way to the tourist hustle and bustle of Venice or Lake Garda, this is a great place to take a few days to unwind. And unwind you can, in and around Bolzano. In the immediate vicinity, you can marvel at the large number of castles and fortresses, but you'll also find them within the city itself. You can also wander around in the main street of the historic center, the Lauben. For centuries, this was the gathering place for traveling merchants.

Delicatessens

In Bolzano, you can eat wonderfully in the typical Italian restaurants and everywhere you will find delicatessens where local delicacies are displayed in the windows. Such as the Bombolini, a sweet treat that most resembles a filled doughnut. On every street corner, you notice the German, Swiss, and Austrian influence in the region, which is called 'Alto Adige' in Italian. Especially in the cuisine.

Take Canederli, which we know in Germany as bread dough dumplings. The Italian version is tastier: with smoked bacon and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Or Gulasch di Selvaggina, with venison, onions, and lots of garlic. All dishes from the mountain fuel category, because you'll only lose the calories in such a meal after felling a few sturdy trees.

Campsites nearby

Camping is possible very close by, at camping Moosbauer, an ecological campsite on the outskirts of the city. Or a little further away: camping Vidor, in Pozza di Fassa: a luxurious family campsite with a swimming pool, wellness, top-notch sanitary facilities and a great restaurant, right in the mountains (40 km from Bolzano). Once you've been there, you won't even want to go to Lake Garda anymore…
