What started as a playful idea to convert an empty company van into a cool camper has grown into a thriving camper building company in just a few years. Why is that? Partners who strengthen each other
Karakter Campers is an initiative of Marte and Guus. Partners who strengthen each other in what they do, building unique bus campers. Marte specializes in the technical aspects such as the installation of the electrical system, the construction of furniture, or fine woodworking. She uses her craftsmanship and talent to ensure that every camper is not only beautiful but also durable and functional.
Guus is the one who arranges everything else and focuses on the creative side. She maintains contact with customers and ensures that every project runs smoothly. As the creative conscience of Karakter Campers, she devises an interior design that truly makes a camper with Character.
Eye for detail
Marte: “As passionate female makers with a keen eye for detail, we love building campers that go off the beaten path. We love to brainstorm with the customer and hear what ideas and wishes they have. Then we delve into this and search everywhere, including in the interior design world, for materials that give a camper a 'one of a kind' look. We both also love coming up with creative eye-catchers and we are very happy to incorporate that into every camper.”
Karakter Campers started almost three years ago, and in that time, about 15 projects have been completed, none of which are alike. These are mainly Ducatos and related models, but almost every type of van is suitable to be transformed into a custom camper by Karakter Campers. You purchase the van yourself. The process from van to camper then begins with a general discussion of your wishes.
Mood board
Based on a mood board, Karakter Campers translates that into a design that matches your vision. Then all the details are filled in, resulting in a definitive design that you, as a customer, have created together with Karakter Campers. After that, the construction phase follows. Marte gets to work to realize everything in detail. During construction, you will be regularly kept informed, and you are always welcome in the workshop in Nijmegen to see how the construction process is progressing.
The result is a camper that fully meets your personal wishes and use. That's not really about the building itself. That's what it should be, seamlessly fitting and perfectly finished. And whether a man or a woman does that, of course, doesn't matter. The journey to get there does make the difference. Attention is paid in a different way to formulating what suits you, and everything is possible in that.
Usually, it's the other way around. There is already a design with a few possible variations, and with some options, it seems custom-made. With a Karakter Camper, it's really different. Just look at the completed projects; each one is surprisingly different from other campers, while they are totally different from each other. The icing on the cake is finally the finish, or rather, styling is a better word for it. Because all Karakter Campers also have one thing in common: the interior always looks incredibly cozy.
Marte and Guus will start workshops for self-builders in April 2025. An excellent opportunity to leave behind paneling and piano hinges and learn how to bring atmosphere and quality into your self-building activities.
