Pössl Summit Plus 600: award-winning camper van

Camper vans are popular. In Germany, they are selling like hotcakes, and in the Netherlands, we are also seeing sales figures rise sharply. On these pages, we take a look at the Pössl Summit Plus 600: named 'Camper of the Year' by the ANWB and 'Motorhome of the Year' by the NKC in the Camper Van category.

Compact, handy, and yet everything on board. For a camping holiday, for a weekend getaway, or for visiting family on the other side of the country: after an evening of drinks, you simply step into your own bed, in the driveway. Due to exploding demand, camper van builder Pössl even opened its own factory last year; a special step for the brand that until now had its campers produced by other manufacturers, mainly Dethleffs. In the new factory – in Vielbrunn – the completely new Summit series rolls off the production line.

We are looking at the Pössl Summit Plus 600 with a transverse bed – a 640 model is also available, with single beds lengthwise. The Citroën Jumper is the base vehicle for this camper van. For the engine, the 2.0-liter engine delivering a hefty 160 hp was chosen. To meet emission requirements, Ad Blue technology is used: a fluid that you occasionally need to refill. The Citroën is only available with a manual gearbox – an automatic is not supplied. Standard, the car is equipped with ABS, ESP, and – kudos! – two airbags: with most brands, that second airbag is strangely enough an option.

The standard equipment also includes 16-inch aluminum rims, tinted Seitz built-in windows with continuously adjustable combi blinds (blackout plus insect screens), and a wide entrance at the sliding door on the right side. Optionally, you can get the sliding door electrically operated, which allows the door to open and close silently – that is the main disadvantage of the manually operated door, which only closes after a good slam. The wide entrance at that sliding door is again part of the extensive standard equipment. The vehicles are available in various colors.

Living, eating, sleeping

Entry into the Summit is easy: thanks to the 70 cm wide step, but also due to the rounded kitchen unit. The furniture – with rounded corners – is finished in wood colors; the cabinet doors have contrasting colors that give the interior a modern look. The height-adjustable seats in the cabin swivel towards the living area and, together with the dinette bench, form a seating area for four people.

The kitchen is equipped with a sink and a hob with two gas burners. There is plenty of workspace available, and you can also store many items in the three drawers and the semicircular corner cabinet. A Dometic absorption refrigerator with a capacity of 90 liters is installed. The middle section of the transverse bed can be folded up, allowing you to place bicycles or a scooter in the central aisle – with the lashing eyes in the floor, you can secure everything properly.

Another special feature under the bed is the wardrobe on the right side, which comes up after pressing the clothes rail – but first, a mattress section must be removed. In the ceiling cabinets above the bed, you can store other clothes and, for example, towels. You can easily enter the toilet area through the sliding door. We see a swivel toilet, and a shower area is created by rotating the washbasin wall – a clever solution that we also encounter with other brands.

Technical installations

At the back of the vehicle, behind the double doors, you'll find the water tank (left) and on the right at the back there's space for a large and a small gas bottle. The Truma heater/boiler is built into the dinette bench, with the frost protection next to it. We also see the fuse box. Pipes and wiring are neatly concealed. Another special feature is the blue night lighting, so you can easily find the toilet.

Conclusion test Pössl Summit Plus 600

With the Summit Plus, Pössl introduces an interesting entry-level camper van. It 'feels' remarkably spacious because the sightlines run all the way from front to back. There are sufficient storage options and in the innovative wardrobe you can even store shirts and a few jackets. For a camper van in this segment, the Summit is very comprehensively equipped, including the standard second airbag for the passenger seat.
