VanTourer Prime 630 L: Panel van camper with storage space

VanTourer Prime 630 L: Panel van camper with storage space

Campers are hot: sales figures are soaring and one of the biggest growers is the panel van camper. For this test, we look at the VanTourer Prima 630 L – a panel van camper built in the Hungarian Knaus factory.

Compact, easy to drive on narrow roads and winding cities, and yet everything on board. That makes the panel van camper a popular holiday friend. The panel van camper is ideal for holidays, weekend trips or a family party on the other side of the country: always have your bed with you. And picking up an Ikea cabinet with such a multifunctional vehicle is, of course, no problem at all.

Outsource construction

Why build a camper yourself when you can have it done by a renowned camper brand? That's what the German company EuroCaravaning must have thought when it developed its VanTourers. The panel van campers roll off the production line in Nagyoroszi (Hungary), in the Knaus factories.

The VanTourer Prime 630 L

The VanTourer Prime 630 L is the largest model, with a length of 636 centimeters. The Prime is the most luxurious version, based on the Fiat Ducato. The panel van camper is equipped with matte black stickers, which gives it a tough appearance. Under the hood is the well-known 2.3-liter Fiat diesel that meets the strictest environmental requirements. The vehicle is equipped with various safety systems, including ABS, ESP, Hill Holder, and dual airbags. A nice feature is the electric step at the sliding door that automatically retracts as soon as you start the engine.

Interior

Living area, bed, kitchen, bathroom: everything on a few square meters. That is the strength of the panel van camper. With the cabin seats in the reversed position, a cozy living area is created. The dinette bench is extendable, allowing four people to have a drink inside. Against the cabin ceiling is a luggage compartment for small items. Handy, but it does mean you have to bend down when you take a seat in the driver's seat and the passenger's seat from the inside. In the evening, you can darken the cabin with the built-in Remi pleated blinds.

VanTourer smart details

The VanTourer is equipped with a compact kitchen with a sink and a two-burner gas stove. Extra workspace is created by a foldable worktop. The high-mounted refrigerator (90 liters) is pleasant because it is easily accessible. The wardrobe underneath is a bit more difficult to reach.

Window in bathroom

Opposite the kitchen, we find the bathroom with toilet and shower facilities. A special feature is the ceramic Dometic toilet (usually we see the plastic version) and the window is a nice addition, allowing for better ventilation than just with the familiar ventilation point on the roof.

At the back of the vehicle, there is a large double bed measuring 200 by 170 centimeters, with a foldable headrest. This creates a comfortable reading spot, but with the headrest up, you can also transport a bicycle inside.

Installations

For heating and hot water, VanTourer uses a Truma diesel combi boiler. The compressor refrigerator also doesn't use gas, so you only need a small gas bottle: just for cooking. This saves a lot of storage space. Pipes and wiring are neatly concealed, and the water tank is not, as usual, under the bed but placed under the camper. This provides extra storage space under the bed. The water tank is also insulated and will therefore not freeze quickly in winter.

Camper test conclusion

VanTourer may still be a somewhat unknown brand, but its panel vans are certainly on par with similar models from more famous brands. The panel van is solidly built: everything shows that it is built in a renowned factory. The interior and finish are excellent. The Vantourer has clever, space-saving solutions on board, and thoughtful choices have been made regarding the technical installations.
