100,000th Volkswagen California produced

With a Volkswagen Camper, you experience the Netherlands, Europe or the World in your own unique way. Recently, the 100,000th Volkswagen California rolled off the production line in Hanover. Volkswagen's Californias are an icon and the most popular compact camper among campers. 2018 will go down in history as the year Volkswagen reached this milestone. This is yet another new production record, just like in 2017. It confirms the growing popularity of perhaps the most famous compact camper.

30th anniversary of the Volkswagen California

In 1988, the Caravan Salon, which was then still held in Essen, Volkswagen presented the first California based on the T3. It was a copy of Westfalia's Joker, also available in America at the time as the Vanagon Camper. Westfalia was then commissioned by Volkswagen to build a large number of these campers. As a result, the price dropped considerably. The VW California was about 10,000 DM cheaper than the Westfalia. However, that had to come from somewhere. Not many options were available. In fact, there was only a choice of two colors, 'pastelweiß' and 'marsalarot'. There was also only one fabric to decorate the interior. You could choose between a raised roof or a pop-top roof. The front seats were also swivel and the carpet on the floor was velour.

The T4 brought about a lot of change. Not only was the engine placed at the front, it was also available in two different lengths. Westfalia was also involved in this model for the interior. In 1991, the first front-wheel drive California rolled off the production line. In 2004, the T5 followed, built entirely by Volkswagen itself. At the same time, sales in the US stopped. That's why you mainly see the older models there. From this moment on, the car brand also became a camper builder. A Beach and Comfort version with a short wheelbase were introduced. The current T6 is available in three variants. If you throw in some options, and most buyers do, you have a custom camper. A cult bus in a wonderfully compact camper size. The value retention is also excellent. Just look at the prices for which the Californias based on the T3 are currently for sale.

Volkswagen Camper Center

Rob Marchal, director of Volkswagen Camper Center: “We are the only official dealer in the Netherlands and even in Europe that is fully specialized in Volkswagen Campers and therefore know every detail of the California. During the many visits to the factory in Hanover, we were always struck by the pleasure and dedication of the people who develop and produce the California. They often ask about our practical experiences and do something with them. We call the Volkswagen California the camper with the most travel experience. You notice that in the layout, the materials used and the clever use of every centimeter. The pop-top roof provides extra living space when you need it. On the road, the California drives like a comfortable passenger car and you can go anywhere with it, both in the city center and on that narrow country road.”
