Anti-theft: extra security with Disklok

Campers are protected against theft by a steering wheel lock, and most insurance companies also require a gearbox lock for motorhomes above a certain value. You can add an extra barrier to protect your valuable possession: with an aftermarket steering wheel lock, such as Disklok.

Strictly speaking, an extra steering wheel lock is not necessary if your camper is insured against theft. But nobody wants their camper to disappear the day before their holiday. An extra steering wheel lock is a good deterrent. The standard steering wheel lock that is factory-fitted is no obstacle for the average car thief. That is why insurance companies require an extra lock on the gearbox for campers above 75,000 euros, such as the Construct or Bearlock locks.

Only delay with lock

But even such professional locks offer no guarantee against theft, because ultimately every lock only delays theft: the SCM quality mark for locks approved by insurers means that such a lock must be able to withstand attacks with hand tools for three minutes. To make your camper less attractive to thieves, you can create extra obstacles, such as an aftermarket steering wheel lock. These usually consist of a long bracket that is clamped to the steering wheel, after which the steering wheel gets stuck against the seat or the windscreen.

The disadvantage of such steering wheel locks is that the bracket can also be used as a lever to force the steering wheel lock with a strong pull. In addition, such locks can be removed relatively easily: by sawing through the steering wheel, for example.

Disklok steering wheel lock

The British brand Disklok takes a different approach. The steering wheel lock consists of a circular hard steel housing with two hinged parts, which enclose the entire steering wheel. A steel handle connects both parts and as soon as you press a cylinder lock, the Disklok is locked. The titanium cylinder lock cannot be drilled open, partly due to the construction with internal loose discs. It can only be unlocked with the supplied key (3 pieces), after which you can remove the Disklok lock.

Because the Disklok is loosely clamped around the steering wheel, the locking bar cannot – as with other steering wheel locks – be used as a lever to force the original steering wheel lock of the car. It is also impossible to steal the airbag, for example. Attaching the lock is very user-friendly. Storing the lock is a slightly different story, as it is a fairly large device.

The Disklok is also SCM-approved and must therefore withstand attacks with hand tools for three minutes. In independent tests, it even manages 15 minutes. The most important effect, however, is theft prevention: due to the extra steering wheel lock, thieves will more quickly opt for an easier target.

The Disklok is available in three sizes (39, 41.5 and 44 cm) and is therefore suitable for steering wheels from 35 to 44 cm. You can measure it yourself, but on the disklok website you can also find the right lock based on the make, type and year of manufacture of the camper.
