Travel carefree with a touring caravan insurance

Things are going well with Dutch caravan sales. In recent years, the sector has shown healthy growth figures, meaning that in 2024, over 7,000 new caravans were sold, in addition to a considerable number of nearly new ones. This popularity is not surprising, of course. After all, there is nothing more enjoyable than hitching up your mobile home with full holiday plans and driving off to your favorite destination. However, you are participating in traffic with it, and that inherently carries a risk. It's time to consider touring caravan insurance as part of good travel preparation.

Separate caravan insurance is not mandatory. When the caravan is attached to the car, it is covered by the insurance of the towing vehicle. However, in almost all countries except the Netherlands, a second green card is required. If your caravan weighs more than 750 kilos and has its own license plate, you can request this from your insurer. This proves that third-party liability is arranged. Damage you cause to others with the caravan is then covered by the car insurance. The condition is that the caravan is attached at the time of the damage. If this is not the case, you can often fall back on your personal liability insurance. However, whether attached or not, damage to the caravan itself is not covered. More information about the legal requirements for caravan use can be found on the website of the Dutch government.

Of course, things can go wrong. Besides the risks in road traffic, a severe hailstorm at Lake Garda can also throw a spanner in the works. Theft is also covered with caravan insurance, which makes sleeping a lot easier when it's ready to go on the driveway. But besides damage or loss of the caravan, the holiday can also be ruined. To alleviate that suffering, depending on the chosen policy, a replacement holiday accommodation is covered by the touring caravan insurance. Repatriation of the caravan is also included.

Fire/Theft

A policy has been developed for older caravans, with a favorable premium that covers the most important risks such as fire or theft. The contents and the awning are also partially reimbursed. The coverage is worldwide.

Casco limited

The Casco limited policy is more extensive. This also covers collision or storm damage, for the new value for 5 years. A good choice if you, for example, take a seasonal pitch with a touring caravan or do not travel very far.

Casco extensive

For globetrotters, the most extensive policy is a godsend, as it includes assistance abroad. Not only the repair costs of the caravan, but also the costs for transporting the caravan back to the Netherlands are reimbursed. And if the caravan can no longer be used due to damage, the costs for replacement holiday accommodation are also reimbursed. With this policy, the caravan itself is covered for the new value for 7 years.
