Travel carefree with touring caravan insurance
The Dutch caravan trade is doing well. In recent years, the sector has shown healthy growth figures, which means that in 2024 more than 7000 new caravans will have been sold, along with a considerable number of slightly used models. This popularity is of course not so surprising. After all, there is nothing more fun than hooking up your palace on wheels full of holiday plans and driving towards your favourite destination. However, this does involve participating in traffic and that is simply a risk. Time to consider taking out insurance for your caravan as part of good travel preparation.
A separate caravan insurance is not mandatory. If the caravan is attached to the car, it is covered by the insurance of the towing vehicle. However, in almost all countries, except the Netherlands, a second green card is required. If your caravan weighs more than 750 kilos and has its own registration number, you can request this from your insurer. This shows that legal liability has been arranged. The damage you cause to others with the caravan is then covered by the car insurance. The condition is that the caravan is connected at the time of the damage. If this is not the case, you can often fall back on your personal liability insurance. However, connected or not, the damage to the caravan itself is not covered.
More information about the legal requirements for caravan use can be found on the website of the central government.
Of course, things can go wrong. In addition to the risks in road traffic, a heavy hailstorm at Lake Garda can also throw a spanner in the works. Theft is also covered by caravan insurance, which means you can sleep a lot more peacefully when it is ready to go on the driveway. But in addition to damage to or loss of the caravan, the holiday is also ruined. To alleviate this suffering, depending on the policy chosen, a replacement holiday home is covered by the caravan insurance. Repatriation of the caravan is also part of this.
Fire/Theft
For a somewhat older caravan, a policy has been developed with a favourable premium and covers the most important risks such as fire or theft. The contents and the awning are also partly reimbursed. The coverage is worldwide.
Casco limited
A lot more extensive is the Casco limited policy. With this, a collision or storm damage is also covered and that for 5 years for the new value. A good choice if you take a seasonal place with a touring caravan or do not go that far away.
Hull extended
For globetrotters, the most comprehensive policy is a godsend, with which assistance abroad is also insured. Not only the repair costs of the caravan, but also the costs for the transport of the caravan back to the Netherlands are reimbursed. And if the caravan can no longer be used due to damage, the costs for a replacement holiday home are also reimbursed. The caravan itself is covered for 7 years with this policy for the new value.
